🔧 Escalade - Transmission Fluid & Filter Change
This job drains the old automatic transmission fluid, removes the transmission pan, replaces the filter, and then refills and sets the fluid level at the correct temperature. On your Escalade, the fluid level is checked through an overflow/level plug, so the vehicle must be level and the fluid must be within a specific temperature range.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle on jack stands on a flat surface; never rely on a jack.
- ⚠️ Exhaust and transmission fluid can be very hot; wear gloves and safety glasses.
- ⚠️ The fluid level must be checked with the engine running—keep hands/clothes away from belts/fans and rotating parts.
- ⚠️ Keep the vehicle level (front-to-rear and side-to-side) or the level check will be wrong.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
- Fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty)
- Metric socket set (8mm–15mm)
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 6" extension (3/8" drive)
- Torque wrench (10–50 Nm range)
- Plastic trim tool
- Brake cleaner spray

- Scan tool with transmission fluid temperature PID (specialty)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid (Dexron HP) - Qty: 7 quarts
- Automatic transmission filter - Qty: 1
- Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
- Drain plug seal washer - Qty: 1
- Level/check plug seal washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Plan to keep the Escalade perfectly level while raised (same height left/right and front/rear).
- Have your scan tool ready to view Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT). This is the temperature inside the transmission.
- Tip: Remove the fill plug first. If you can’t refill it, don’t drain it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Warm the fluid slightly
- Drive 10–15 minutes so the transmission shifts normally, then park on level ground.
- Turn the engine off and open your hood for airflow.
Step 2: Raise and level the vehicle
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front and rear as needed.
- Set the Escalade down on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and confirm it sits level.
- Keep wheel chocks in place.
Step 3: Locate and loosen the fill plug
- Place a drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the transmission pan area.
- Use your metric socket set (8mm–15mm) and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the transmission fill plug (do not remove it yet).
- If the fill plug is stuck, stop here and address that first (do not drain).
Step 4: Drain the old fluid
- Use your metric socket set (8mm–15mm) and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the drain plug (if equipped) and drain into the pan.
- Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Remove the transmission pan
- Use a metric socket set (8mm–15mm), 3/8" drive ratchet, and 6" extension (3/8" drive) to remove the pan bolts.
- Leave 2 bolts loosely threaded at one end to control the drop, then carefully lower the pan.
- Use a plastic trim tool if the pan gasket is lightly stuck (avoid gouging the mating surface).
Step 6: Replace the transmission filter
- Pull the old filter straight down by hand (a little fluid will spill).
- Make sure the old filter seal (rubber O-ring) comes out with the filter.
- Install the new filter by pushing it straight up until fully seated.
Step 7: Clean the pan and reinstall with a new gasket
- Clean the pan and magnet(s) using brake cleaner spray and shop towels.
- Install the new transmission pan gasket.
- Hand-start all bolts, then snug them evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Final tighten using a torque wrench (10–50 Nm range): Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 8: Refill the transmission
- Remove the fill plug using your metric socket set (8mm–15mm) and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Use a fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty) to pump Dexron HP into the fill port until fluid just begins to come back out.
- Reinstall the fill plug finger-tight for now.
Step 9: Set the fluid level at temperature (critical)
- Connect your scan tool with transmission fluid temperature PID (specialty) and monitor TFT.
- Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
- Shift slowly through P-R-N-D and back to P, pausing 2–3 seconds in each gear to fill circuits.
- With the engine idling and the vehicle level, bring TFT to 30–50°C (86–122°F).
- Remove the transmission level/check plug using your metric socket set (8mm–15mm) and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Correct level is a thin stream/drip from the level hole:
- If no fluid comes out, add Dexron HP through the fill port using the fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty) until it drips.
- If fluid pours out heavily, wait until it reduces to a drip (still within the temperature window).
- Install and tighten the level/check plug: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Install and tighten the fill plug: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Lower the vehicle
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift slightly, remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then lower the Escalade.
- Remove wheel chocks.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and check underneath for leaks around the pan, drain plug, and level/check plug.
- Test drive 10–15 minutes, then recheck for leaks.
- If you notice delayed engagement, slipping, or harsh shifting, re-check the level procedure (vehicle level and TFT window matter).
