🔧 Expedition - Transmission Fluid & Filter Change

On your Expedition’s 6-speed automatic (6R80), the transmission fluid lubricates and cools the clutches and gears. Replacing the fluid (and filter) helps prevent slipping, harsh shifts, and overheating—especially with towing or heavy use.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface; support the SUV with jack stands before getting underneath.
  • ⚠️ Transmission fluid can be hot; let it cool and wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ Keep the engine running only when instructed; stay clear of the driveshafts and exhaust.
  • ⚠️ Do not use “universal” ATF—this transmission requires MERCON LV.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (in-lb capable)
  • Socket set (8mm-13mm)
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • 5mm hex bit socket
  • Trim clip tool
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop rags
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • OBD2 scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature (specialty)
  • Infrared thermometer

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission filter - Qty: 1
  • Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
  • MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 10-14 quarts
  • Transmission pan bolt kit - Qty: 1 (recommended if bolts are rusty)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Warm the transmission with a 10–15 minute drive so the fluid drains better, then shut it off and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Plan to keep the SUV level while filling/checking fluid (this is critical for correct level).
  • Assumption: Your Expedition uses the 6R80 with a pan-level check (no dipstick).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the SUV

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the approved lift point.
  • Set it down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then lift/support the rear if needed so the vehicle sits level.
  • Place wheel chocks to prevent rolling.

Step 2: Remove any splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip tool and a 10mm socket to remove the fasteners and lower the shield.
  • Set the fasteners aside in a small tray.

Step 3: Drain the transmission fluid

  • Position a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the transmission pan.
  • If your pan has a drain plug, remove it with a 19mm socket and let it drain fully.
  • If there is no drain plug: loosen the pan bolts with a 10mm socket, leaving a few bolts threaded at one end so the pan can tip and drain into the catch pan.

Step 4: Remove the transmission pan

  • Remove the remaining bolts using a 10mm socket and lower the pan carefully—more fluid will spill.
  • Clean the pan with brake cleaner spray and shop rags.
  • Wipe the pan magnet(s) clean (they catch metal dust; a light gray paste is normal).

Step 5: Replace the transmission filter

  • Pull the old filter straight down by hand. If it’s stubborn, gently work it loose—don’t crack the valve body.
  • Make sure the old filter seal (a rubber ring) comes out with the filter. If it’s stuck in the case, carefully remove it with a plastic gasket scraper.
  • Lubricate the new filter seal with fresh MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid, then push the new filter into place until fully seated.

Step 6: Install the pan and gasket

  • Install a new transmission pan gasket onto the pan.
  • Start all pan bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten pan bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten using a 3/8" drive torque wrench (in-lb capable): Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lb).

Step 7: Fill the transmission (initial fill)

  • Locate the transmission fill plug on the case. Remove it using a 19mm socket or 5mm hex bit socket (varies by plug style).
  • Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump in MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid until it begins to run back out of the fill/level opening.
  • Reinstall the fill plug finger-tight for now (you will re-check level hot).

Step 8: Warm up and set the fluid level (this is the most important part)

  • Lower the SUV enough that it remains safely supported and level on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Connect your OBD2 scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature (specialty) and monitor TFT (transmission fluid temp). If you can’t read TFT, use an infrared thermometer on the pan as a close estimate.
  • Start the engine. With your foot on the brake, move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D and back, pausing 2–3 seconds in each gear to fill circuits.
  • With engine idling in Park, bring fluid temperature to about 35–45°C (95–113°F) for the level check.
  • Remove the fill/level plug using the 19mm socket or 5mm hex bit socket.
  • Correct level = a thin stream/dribble coming out.
  • If nothing comes out, pump in more fluid with the fluid transfer pump (specialty) until it just starts to dribble out.
  • When it becomes a slow drip, reinstall and tighten the plug using a 3/8" drive ratchet.

Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield

  • Reinstall the shield using the 10mm socket and trim clip tool.

âś… After Repair

  • Clean any spilled fluid with brake cleaner spray and shop rags, then check for leaks with the engine idling.
  • Test drive 10–15 minutes. Confirm normal shifts and no slipping or flare.
  • Re-check for leaks around the pan and fill/level plug after the drive.
  • Tip: Dispose of used ATF at a recycling center.
