- Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels if the front of the vehicle will be raised.
- Drive the vehicle until the transaxle is warm, then shut it OFF.
- If possible, use a scan tool to watch transaxle fluid temperature during the final level check.
- Have the new fluid ready before opening the fill plug.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and level the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle, then support it securely with jack stands.
- Keep the vehicle as level as possible for accurate fluid checking.
- Level matters for fluid level.
Step 2: Remove the underbody cover
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the fasteners holding the lower engine or transaxle splash shield.
- Set the cover and fasteners aside.
Step 3: Loosen the fill plug first
- Use a 24mm socket to loosen the fill plug on the transaxle case.
- Do this before draining the fluid so you know it will refill.
Step 4: Drain the old fluid
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug.
- Use the 24mm socket to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain completely.
- Install a new drain plug gasket on the drain plug.
- Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Remove the level check plug and overflow tube
- Use a 24mm socket to remove the level check plug.
- If equipped with an overflow tube, use the 24mm socket to remove it as well.
- This lets you set the exact fluid level later.
Step 6: Reinstall the overflow tube and level check plug loosely
- Reinstall the overflow tube and level check plug by hand first.
- Do not fully torque the fill plug yet if you still need to add fluid.
Step 7: Fill with new fluid
- Use the fluid level pump or transfer pump to add Toyota WS fluid through the fill opening.
- Keep adding until fluid begins to flow out of the level check opening.
- This means the transaxle is close to full.
Step 8: Set the final fluid level at temperature
- Use a scan tool or temperature monitor to watch transaxle fluid temperature.
- With the engine and hybrid system in the proper service state, continue until fluid temperature is in the specified check range.
- When fluid just dribbles from the level check opening, the level is correct.
- If it pours out heavily, let it slow to a small stream or drip.
- Small drip is the goal.
Step 9: Tighten the level check plug and fill plug
- Install new gaskets on the plugs if needed.
- Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the level check plug.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the fill plug.
- Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall the splash shield
- Use the 10mm socket to reinstall the underbody cover.
- Make sure all clips and fasteners are secure.

- Start the vehicle and check for leaks around the drain, fill, and level plugs.
- Road test gently and confirm normal operation.
- Recheck for seepage after the test drive.
- Dispose of used fluid at a proper recycling center.
