🔧 XC60 - Transmission Fluid Change

This procedure drains and refills the automatic transmission fluid, then sets the fluid level at the correct temperature. On your XC60, the level check is the critical part, because too little or too much fluid can cause shifting problems.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Use jack stands on level ground. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Transmission fluid can be hot. Let the vehicle cool before draining.
  • Keep dirt out of the transmission. Clean the area around the drain and fill plugs first.
  • Do not overfill. Fluid level must be set at the specified temperature.
  • Assumption: This is the 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission with a drain-and-fill service procedure.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 8mm hex bit socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Long funnel
  • Scan tool with transmission temperature live data
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 6-9 liters
  • Transmission drain plug seal - Qty: 1
  • Transmission fill plug seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Raise and support the vehicle evenly so it stays level.
  • Warm the transmission with a short drive, then shut the engine off.
  • Have the scan tool ready to monitor transmission fluid temperature.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fill point first

  • Use the 8mm hex bit socket to remove the transmission fill plug before draining.
  • This confirms you can refill the transmission after the fluid is drained.
  • Always verify fill access first.

Step 2: Drain the old fluid

  • Place a drain pan under the transmission.
  • Use the 8mm hex bit socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain completely.
  • Replace the drain plug seal with a new one.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs) when reinstalling the drain plug.

Step 3: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Clean the drain plug and sealing surface with a clean shop towel.
  • Install the drain plug by hand first, then tighten with the torque wrench.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Refill with fresh fluid

  • Use a fluid transfer pump and long funnel to add transmission fluid through the fill port.
  • Add fluid slowly until it begins to run back out of the fill hole.
  • Install the fill plug loosely so you can perform the level check.

Step 5: Set the fluid level

  • Start the engine and keep the vehicle safely supported and level.
  • Use the scan tool with transmission temperature live data to monitor fluid temperature.
  • With your foot on the brake, move the shifter through each gear position for a few seconds, then return to Park.
  • When the fluid reaches the specified temperature window, remove the fill plug.
  • Add fluid until a thin stream or steady drip comes from the fill hole.
  • Reinstall the fill plug with a new seal.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Final check

  • Wipe the area clean with clean shop towels.
  • Lower the vehicle.
  • Road test the XC60 and check for leaks after the test drive.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify smooth shifting through all gears.
  • Check for leaks around both plugs after the road test.
  • If the old fluid was very dark or burnt, consider a second drain-and-fill after a short drive.
