🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Fill

On your RAV4, the transmission uses a sealed-style fill system with no dipstick, so the fluid level must be set carefully through the check plug. The job is mostly drain, refill, warm up, and confirm the final level at the correct fluid temperature.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the vehicle level. A tilted vehicle can give a false fluid level.
  • Transmission fluid can be hot. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • Keep the engine off while draining and while removing the drain/fill plugs.
  • You must use the correct Toyota fluid level check temperature. Too cold or too hot gives the wrong level.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Funnel with long hose
  • Drain pan
  • 10mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 24mm socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Scan tool with transmission fluid temperature display (specialty)
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 4-5 quarts for drain and fill; more if performing multiple drain-and-fill cycles
  • Transmission drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
  • Transmission fill/check plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the vehicle and support it level on jack stands.
  • Have the new fluid ready before opening the drain plug.
  • Have a scan tool ready to read transmission fluid temperature.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the RAV4.
  • Set the vehicle on jack stands so it sits level.
  • Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
  • Level position matters.

Step 2: Locate the transmission plugs

  • Find the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan area.
  • Find the fill/check plug on the side of the transmission case.
  • Clean both areas with shop towels before opening them.

Step 3: Remove the fill/check plug first

  • Use a 24mm socket to loosen the fill/check plug first.
  • This confirms the plug will come out before you drain the fluid.
  • If you cannot remove the fill plug, do not drain the transmission yet.

Step 4: Drain the old fluid

  • Place a drain pan under the transmission.
  • Use a 24mm socket to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain fully.
  • Replace the drain plug gasket with a new one.

Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Install the drain plug by hand first.
  • Use a torque wrench with a 24mm socket to tighten the drain plug to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Add new transmission fluid

  • Use a fluid transfer pump and funnel with long hose to fill through the fill port.
  • Add Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid until fluid begins to overflow lightly from the check port area.
  • Install the fill/check plug loosely for now.

Step 7: Warm the transmission and set the final level

  • Start the engine.
  • With your scan tool with transmission fluid temperature display (specialty), monitor transmission fluid temperature.
  • Move the shift lever through each gear position, pausing a few seconds in each one.
  • Leave the engine idling.
  • When fluid temperature reaches the correct checking range, remove the check plug.
  • At the proper temperature, fluid should drip out in a thin stream or steady dribble.
  • If no fluid comes out, add more until it does.
  • If a heavy stream comes out, let excess drain until it becomes a drip.

Step 8: Final tighten the fill/check plug

  • Install a new gasket on the fill/check plug.
  • Use a torque wrench with a 24mm socket to tighten the fill/check plug to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the case clean with shop towels.

Step 9: Lower and road test

  • Lower the vehicle carefully with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Start the engine and check for leaks under the transmission.
  • Drive the vehicle and confirm smooth shifting.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck for leaks after the road test.
  • If shifting feels harsh, confirm the fluid level was set at the correct temperature.
  • Dispose of old transmission fluid properly at a recycling center.
  • If you changed a large amount of fluid, a second drain-and-fill later can help refresh more of the old fluid.
