🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Refill
This service removes old automatic transmission fluid and replaces it with fresh fluid. Your Equinox uses a sealed-style transmission, so the final level has to be set correctly with the vehicle level and the fluid at the proper temperature.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a completely level surface. A wrong angle can give a wrong fluid level.
- Exhaust and transmission fluid can be hot. Let the vehicle cool before starting.
- Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
- This transmission level check requires the fluid temperature to be monitored with a scan tool.
- Do not overfill. Too much fluid can cause shifting problems and leaks.
- No battery disconnect is normally required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan
- Ratcheting wrench set
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- Torque wrench
- Fluid pump with hose
- Scan tool with transmission fluid temperature data
- Funnel
- Clean shop towels
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid, DEXRON-VI - Qty: 5-7 quarts
- Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
- Transmission fluid drain plug seal - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the transmission cool enough to work safely.
- Raise and support the vehicle so it stays level.
- Have the scan tool ready before you start. You need transmission fluid temperature for the final level check.
- Keep everything clean.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the vehicle
- Use a floor jack to raise the vehicle on level ground.
- Place jack stands under the proper support points.
- Make sure the vehicle is level before draining.
Step 2: Remove the splash shield
- Use an 8mm socket to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Set the shield and hardware aside.
Step 3: Drain the transmission fluid
- Place a drain pan under the transmission pan.
- Use the correct socket or ratcheting wrench to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain fully.
- Inspect the fluid for metal debris or a burned smell.
- Install a new drain plug seal if equipped.
- Torque the drain plug to 24 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove and replace the pan gasket if servicing the pan
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the transmission pan bolts.
- Lower the pan carefully. A little fluid may still be trapped inside.
- Clean the pan and magnet with clean shop towels.
- Install the new pan gasket.
- Reinstall the pan and start all bolts by hand.
- Torque the pan bolts to 11 Nm (97 in-lbs).
Step 5: Refill with fresh fluid
- Locate the transmission fill port.
- Use a fluid pump with hose to add DEXRON-VI fluid.
- Add fluid slowly.
- Start with about 4-5 quarts, then continue during the level check.
- Do not guess the final level.
Step 6: Warm the transmission and check the level
- Start the engine and keep the vehicle level.
- Use the scan tool to watch transmission fluid temperature.
- With the engine running, move the shifter through each gear position, pausing briefly in each one.
- Return to Park.
- At the specified fluid temperature range, remove the level check plug.
- If fluid dribbles out, the level is close. If nothing comes out, add fluid until it does.
- If fluid pours out strongly, let it drain until it reduces to a steady drip.
- Reinstall the level plug and torque it to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield
- Use the 8mm socket to reinstall the shield fasteners.
- Make sure all clips and screws are secure.
✅ After Repair
- Lower the vehicle and test drive gently.
- Check for leaks around the drain plug, pan gasket, and level plug.
- Verify the shift quality after the road test.
- Recheck for leaks after the first drive.
- If you see harsh shifting or slipping, stop driving and recheck the fluid level.
