🔧 Transmission Fluid Change - Automatic Service
Changing the automatic transmission fluid helps remove worn fluid and keeps shifting smooth. On your Sierra, the important part is using the exact GM-spec fluid and setting the level at the correct transmission temperature.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface and support the vehicle securely with jack stands before going underneath.
- The transmission fluid and pan may be hot. Let the truck cool before opening the drain.
- Keep dirt out of the transmission. Clean the area around the fill and drain plugs before removal.
- Do not overfill. The fluid level must be set at the correct fluid temperature.
- If your truck has an electronic parking brake or any service mode prompts, follow them before lifting.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan
- Ratchet
- Socket set metric
- Hex bit socket set metric
- Torque wrench
- Fluid transfer pump
- Funnel
- Scan tool with transmission temperature data

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 1 service fill, use the exact GM-spec fluid listed for your transmission

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Raise and support the truck level. Keeping it level is important for the final fluid check.
- Have the scan tool ready to read transmission fluid temperature before you start filling.
- Make sure you have the correct GM-spec fluid for your transmission. Do not mix fluid types.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Warm the transmission slightly
- Drive the truck for 10-15 minutes so the fluid is warm, not hot.
- Park on level ground and shut the engine off.
- Warm fluid drains more completely.
Step 2: Raise and secure the truck
- Use the floor jack to lift the truck and place it on jack stands at the proper lift points.
- Keep the truck level front to back and side to side.
Step 3: Drain the transmission fluid
- Put the drain pan under the transmission pan.
- Use the correct hex bit socket to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain completely.
- Inspect the drain plug seal and replace it if flattened or damaged.
- Torque the drain plug to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the pan and filter
- Use the correct metric socket to loosen and remove the pan bolts.
- Lower the pan carefully and pour out the remaining fluid.
- Remove the old filter from the transmission using your hands or a gentle pull.
- Clean the pan thoroughly with brake cleaner and shop rags.
- Clean the magnet inside the pan and reinstall it in the same location.
Step 5: Install the new filter and pan
- Push the new filter into place until fully seated.
- Install the new pan gasket.
- Reinstall the pan by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the torque wrench and tighten the pan bolts in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque the pan bolts to 11 Nm (97 in-lbs).
Step 6: Refill with the correct fluid
- Remove the fill plug with the correct hex bit socket.
- Use a fluid transfer pump to add the specified transmission fluid through the fill port.
- Fill until fluid just begins to dribble from the fill hole.
- Install the fill plug finger tight for now.
Step 7: Set the final fluid level
- Start the engine and keep the truck level.
- Use the scan tool to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
- Move the shifter slowly through all gear positions, then return to Park.
- With the engine running, remove the fill plug again and top off fluid as needed.
- When fluid is at the correct level and only a small drip comes out, reinstall the fill plug.
- Torque the fill plug to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Correct level checks depend on fluid temperature.
Step 8: Lower the truck and check for leaks
- Lower the truck carefully.
- Wipe the pan and plugs clean.
- Start the engine and inspect for leaks around the pan, drain plug, and fill plug.
✅ After Repair
- Road test the truck and confirm smooth shifting.
- Recheck for leaks after the drive.
- If the transmission shifts harshly or slips, recheck fluid level at the correct temperature.
- Dispose of used fluid at a recycling center or auto parts store.
