🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Refill

Changing the transmission fluid helps keep shift quality smooth and protects the internal clutch packs and valve body. On your Sierra, the fluid level must be set at the correct temperature with the engine running, so the final check matters just as much as the drain and refill.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Use jack stands on a level surface. Never work under a truck supported only by a jack.
  • Transmission fluid can be hot. Let the vehicle cool before draining.
  • Keep the engine running only when checking final fluid level.
  • Do not overfill. Overfilled transmission fluid can cause foaming and shifting problems.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Metric socket set
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Fluid pump or hand pump
  • Fluid level check tool
  • Scan tool (specialty)
  • Clean shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid (DEXRON-VI) - Qty: 6-12 quarts
  • Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
  • Transmission filter - Qty: 1
  • Transmission pan bolts - Qty: 1 set if damaged
  • Drain plug seal - Qty: 1 if equipped

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the truck and support it securely on jack stands if you need access underneath.
  • Assumption: this is the GM automatic transmission service procedure with a drain plug and final level check through the fill/check point. Fluid amount may vary slightly by transmission build.
  • Have the scan tool ready if you want the most accurate fluid temperature reading.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the truck

  • Use the floor jack to lift the truck.
  • Support it with jack stands under the frame.
  • Make sure the truck is level before the final fluid check.

Step 2: Drain the old fluid

  • Use the metric socket set and ratchet to remove the transmission drain plug if equipped.
  • Let the fluid drain fully into the drain pan.
  • Warm fluid drains faster.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 18 N·m (13 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Remove the transmission pan

  • Use the metric socket set to loosen the pan bolts evenly.
  • Hold the pan with one hand while removing the last bolts.
  • Lower the pan carefully and pour out any remaining fluid.
  • Clean the pan and magnet with clean shop rags.
  • Metal paste on the magnet is normal.

Step 4: Replace the filter and gasket

  • Pull the old filter straight down with your hand.
  • Install the new transmission filter until fully seated.
  • Install the new transmission pan gasket on the pan.
  • Raise the pan into position and start all bolts by hand.

Step 5: Reinstall the transmission pan

  • Use the torque wrench and metric socket set to tighten the pan bolts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to 12 N·m (106 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. The pan gasket can leak if crushed.

Step 6: Add new fluid

  • Use a fluid pump or hand pump to add DEXRON-VI automatic transmission fluid through the fill point.
  • Add about 5-6 quarts first, then stop.
  • Reinstall the fill plug loosely if needed.

Step 7: Warm up and set final level

  • Start the engine with the truck still level.
  • Use the scan tool to read transmission fluid temperature.
  • Shift slowly through each gear, then return to Park.
  • With fluid at the proper temperature window, remove the check/fill plug and add fluid until it just begins to dribble out.
  • Reinstall the plug and Torque to 18 N·m (13 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Inspect for leaks

  • Use clean shop rags to wipe the pan and plugs dry.
  • Check for drips around the gasket, drain plug, and fill/check plug.
  • Lower the truck once everything is dry and secure.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive the truck and confirm smooth shifts.
  • Recheck for leaks after the first test drive.
  • If shifts feel harsh or delayed, recheck the fluid level at the correct temperature.
  • Dispose of the old fluid at a proper recycling center.
