🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Fill
Assumption: this S60 has the 8-speed Geartronic automatic. A proper service means draining the old fluid, refilling with the correct Volvo-approved ATF, then setting the level at the correct fluid temperature.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface. Transmission level checking is temperature-sensitive.
- ATF can be hot. Let the vehicle cool enough to avoid burns, but not fully cold if you are doing a warm level check.
- Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
- Keep the engine running only when the procedure calls for a level check.
- Do not overfill. Too much fluid can cause foaming and shift problems.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan
- Fluid transfer pump
- Torque wrench
- Transmission fluid temperature scan tool
- Correct-size socket for transmission drain and fill plugs
- Rags or shop towels
- Funnel with hose
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Volvo-approved automatic transmission fluid meeting JWS 3324 / AW-1 spec - Qty: 5 quarts
- Transmission drain plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
- Transmission fill plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Warm the transmission with a short drive so the fluid drains more completely.
- Raise and support the vehicle so it stays level.
- Have the scan tool ready to read transmission fluid temperature.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Warm the transmission
- Drive the vehicle 10-15 minutes so the fluid reaches operating temperature.
- Warm fluid drains more completely.
Step 2: Raise and level the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle and place it securely on jack stands.
- Make sure the vehicle sits level front-to-rear and side-to-side.
Step 3: Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid
- Place the drain pan under the transmission.
- Use the correct-size socket to remove the transmission drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain fully.
- Inspect the drained fluid for glitter, metal chunks, or a burnt smell.
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug
- Install a new drain plug sealing washer.
- Use the torque wrench and tighten the drain plug to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Refill with new transmission fluid
- Use the fluid transfer pump or funnel hose to add Volvo-approved ATF through the fill port.
- Add fluid slowly until it begins to run back out of the fill opening.
- Install the fill plug finger-tight for now.
Step 6: Set the fluid level
- Start the engine and keep the vehicle level.
- Use the scan tool to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
- Move the shifter slowly through each gear position, pausing briefly in each one, then return to Park.
- With the fluid at the correct temperature range, remove the fill plug again and top off until a thin stream just begins to dribble out.
- Install a new fill plug sealing washer and tighten the fill plug to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
- A small dribble means the level is right.
Step 7: Check for leaks
- Wipe the area clean with rags.
- Look for leaks at both plugs while the engine is running and after shutdown.
✅ After Repair
- Road test the vehicle and check for smooth shifting.
- Recheck for leaks after the test drive.
- If shifts feel abnormal, verify the fluid level again at the correct temperature.
