🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Refill
This procedure replaces the transmission fluid by draining the pan and refilling with the correct Toyota-spec fluid. It is the safest DIY service for your RAV4 automatic transmission and helps keep shift quality smooth.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface. The fluid level must be checked with the vehicle level.
- The transmission fluid may be hot. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
- Use only Toyota WS or equivalent fluid that meets Toyota WS specification.
- Do not overfill. The fluid level is set by temperature and overflow at the check plug.
- A lift or four jack stands is strongly preferred to keep the vehicle level.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid - Toyota WS - Qty: 4-5 quarts
- Transmission drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
- Transmission overflow/check plug gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Raise and support the vehicle so it stays level.
- Warm the transmission with a short drive so the fluid drains more completely.
- Have the new fluid and pump ready before opening the fill plug.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the under cover
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the lower engine under cover fasteners.
- Set the cover and fasteners aside in order.
Step 2: Loosen the fill plug first
- Use the 24mm socket to loosen the transmission fill plug before draining.
- This confirms you can refill it later. Never drain first and find a stuck fill plug.
Step 3: Drain the old fluid
- Place the drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
- Use the 24mm socket to remove the drain plug and let the fluid drain fully.
- Replace the drain plug gasket with a new one.
- Torque the drain plug to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug
- Install the drain plug with the new gasket by hand first.
- Use the torque wrench and 24mm socket to tighten it.
- Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Add fresh fluid
- Use the fluid transfer pump and funnel to add Toyota WS fluid through the fill opening.
- Add about the same amount that drained out, then leave room for final level setting.
- Install the fill plug finger-tight for now.
Step 6: Set the fluid level
- Start the engine and move the shifter through all gear positions, pausing a few seconds in each.
- Keep the engine running and monitor transmission fluid temperature with a scan tool or infrared thermometer.
- When fluid temperature is in the correct check range, remove the overflow/check plug carefully with the 24mm socket.
- Add fluid through the fill hole until a thin stream drips from the overflow opening.
- When it slows to a steady drip, reinstall the overflow/check plug.
- Torque the overflow/check plug to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Final tighten and reassemble
- Install the fill plug fully and tighten it with the 24mm socket.
- Torque the fill plug to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall the under cover using the 10mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- Road test the vehicle and confirm smooth shifts.
- Check underneath for leaks after the test drive.
- Recheck for drips from the drain, fill, and overflow plugs.
- If shifts feel abnormal, recheck fluid level using the temperature-based procedure.
