🔧 Transaxle Fluid Change - Drain and Fill

Your Camry uses a hybrid transaxle, not a traditional automatic transmission. This service replaces the fluid in the transaxle case by draining it and refilling to the correct level, which helps protect the hybrid drive components and keep shifting smooth.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Hybrids can start the engine automatically. Keep the car fully powered down before working.
  • Do not place hands near orange high-voltage cables or hybrid system components.
  • Use a floor jack and jack stands on level ground. Never rely on the jack alone.
  • The fluid may be hot if the vehicle was recently driven.
  • No battery disconnect is normally required for this drain-and-fill service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Fluid pump or hand pump (specialty)
  • Drain pan
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Funnel
  • Rags
  • Trim clip tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid, Toyota WS spec - Qty: 4 quarts
  • Transaxle drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
  • Transaxle fill plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the vehicle cool if it was recently driven.
  • Turn the car fully OFF and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • Raise and support the front of the car safely on jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the underbody cover

  • Use a 10mm socket and trim clip tool to remove the fasteners holding the lower splash shield.
  • Set the cover and hardware aside in order.

Step 2: Locate the fill plug and drain plug

  • Find the transaxle case on the driver side area of the powertrain.
  • The fill plug is the upper plug. The drain plug is lower on the case.
  • Always remove the fill plug first.

Step 3: Remove the fill plug

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to loosen and remove the fill plug.
  • If the fill plug is stuck and you cannot remove it, stop here and do not drain the fluid yet.

Step 4: Drain the old fluid

  • Place the drain pan under the drain plug.
  • Use the 14mm socket to remove the drain plug and let the fluid drain completely.
  • Replace the drain plug gasket with a new one.
  • Install the drain plug and Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Refill with new transaxle fluid

  • Use the fluid pump to add Toyota WS fluid through the fill opening.
  • Add fluid slowly until it begins to seep back out of the fill hole.
  • This vehicle is checked by fill level, not by dipstick.

Step 6: Install the fill plug

  • Install a new fill plug gasket.
  • Use the 14mm socket to install the fill plug.
  • Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the underbody cover

  • Use the 10mm socket and trim clip tool to reinstall the splash shield and fasteners.
  • Make sure all clips and bolts are fully seated.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and look underneath for leaks.
  • Drive gently and verify smooth operation.
  • Recheck the fill area after the road test for any seepage.
