🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Replacement
Your Camry uses a cartridge-style oil filter and low-viscosity synthetic oil. On a hybrid, the engine can shut off and start automatically, so the car must be fully OFF before you begin and kept out of READY mode during service.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Make sure the vehicle is fully OFF and not in READY mode before opening the hood.
- Keep the key fob away from the vehicle so the hybrid system does not wake up.
- Let the engine and exhaust cool before draining oil.
- Use jack stands if you lift the front of the car; never rely on a jack alone.
- Dispose of used oil and filter properly. Do not pour oil on the ground or into drains.

- Raise the front only if needed for access, then support it with jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the front
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
- Place jack stands under the support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
- Never work under a car supported only by a jack.

- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the bolts holding the lower engine cover.
- Set the cover and fasteners aside in order.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Position the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 14mm socket to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain completely.
- Install a new drain plug gasket on the plug.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Replace the oil filter element
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter housing.
- Use the 64mm 14-flute oil filter cap wrench (specialty) to remove the filter housing cap.
- Pull out the old filter element and remove the old O-rings.
- Install the new O-rings from the kit and lightly coat them with clean engine oil.
- Install the new filter element.
- Reinstall the housing cap and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Refill with new oil
- Lower the vehicle if needed so it sits level.
- Use a funnel to add 0W-16 full synthetic engine oil through the oil fill cap.
- Start with about 4.5 quarts, then top off carefully after checking the level.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 6: Check for leaks and verify level
- Start the vehicle and let it idle briefly.
- Check the drain plug and filter housing for leaks.
- Turn the vehicle off, wait a few minutes, then check the dipstick and add oil as needed.
- Do not overfill.
Step 7: Reinstall the under cover
- Use the 14mm socket to reinstall the lower engine cover.
- Make sure all fasteners are secure.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm there are no oil leaks after a short drive.
- Check the oil level again on level ground after the engine sits for a few minutes.
- Reset the maintenance reminder if it is due: Menu > Settings > Vehicle Settings > Scheduled Maintenance or the maintenance menu in the instrument cluster, depending on screen setup.
