🔧 Engine Oil and Oil Filter - Replacement

Your Tiguan uses a cartridge-style oil filter and a drain plug service. This job is straightforward if you take your time, keep the engine warm-not-hot, and follow the torque specs closely so you do not crack the filter housing or strip the drain plug.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and support the vehicle with jack stands. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • Engine oil can be very hot. Let the engine cool slightly before draining.
  • Use eye protection and gloves. Used oil is messy and can burn skin.
  • Keep the ignition off and key away from the vehicle while you work underneath.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 19mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • Oil filter cap wrench, 74mm 14-flute (specialty)
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Flat-blade trim tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil meeting VW 502 00 specification, 5W-40 full synthetic - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter cartridge kit - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Run the engine for 2-3 minutes so the oil flows easier, then shut it off.
  • Let it sit briefly so the oil is warm, not scalding.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap to help draining.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of the Tiguan at the approved lift point.
  • Place the vehicle on jack stands and confirm it is stable before going underneath.
  • Set wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.

Step 2: Remove the lower engine cover

  • Use the flat-blade trim tool to release the fasteners or clips for the lower splash shield.
  • Lower the cover and set it aside.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Position the oil drain pan under the drain plug.
  • Use the 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain completely.
  • Install a new drain plug crush washer on the plug.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Replace the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the filter housing.
  • Use the oil filter cap wrench, 74mm 14-flute to loosen the filter housing cap.
  • Remove the old cartridge filter from the cap.
  • Replace the O-rings from the new filter kit onto the cap.
  • Install the new cartridge filter.
  • Thread the cap back in by hand, then Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Refill with new oil

  • Lower the vehicle to level ground.
  • Use the funnel to add about 5.5 quarts of new engine oil.
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to settle.

Step 6: Check the oil level and inspect for leaks

  • Use the dipstick, if equipped, or the dash oil level display if fitted on your Tiguan.
  • Add oil in small amounts until the level is correct.
  • Inspect the drain plug and filter housing for leaks.
  • Do not overfill.

Step 7: Reinstall the lower cover

  • Use the flat-blade trim tool to reinstall the splash shield fasteners.
  • Make sure the cover is seated properly before lowering the vehicle fully.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine again and watch for any oil leaks.
  • Check the oil level one more time after a short drive.
  • Reset the service reminder in the instrument cluster or infotainment if your Tiguan displays one.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter at a recycling center.
