🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Oil Change

Changing the engine oil and filter keeps the engine clean, protects internal parts, and helps your RAV4 run smoothly. On this model, the oil filter is a cartridge style in a housing, so you’ll remove the cap and replace the filter element, O-rings, and drain plug gasket.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool down before draining. Hot oil can burn you.
  • Work on level ground and keep the parking brake fully engaged.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the vehicle. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter properly. Do not pour oil on the ground or into drains.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm socket
  • 64mm 14-flute oil filter wrench (specialty)
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Oil filter element - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter housing O-ring set - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool until the oil pan and exhaust are safe to touch.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle only if needed for access, then support it with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the oil filler cap and dipstick

  • Open the hood and remove the engine oil filler cap.
  • Pull the dipstick out slightly to help oil drain faster.

Step 2: Drain the engine oil

  • Place the oil drain pan under the drain plug.
  • Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain fully.
  • Install a new drain plug gasket on the plug.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Replace the oil filter element

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter housing.
  • Use the 64mm 14-flute oil filter wrench (specialty) and ratchet to loosen the filter housing cap.
  • Remove the cap and old filter element.
  • Replace the large and small O-rings on the housing cap.
  • Install the new filter element on the cap.
  • Lubricate the new O-rings with fresh engine oil. This helps the seals slide without tearing.
  • Reinstall the housing cap and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Add new engine oil

  • Use a funnel and add about 4.5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil.
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap.
  • Start the engine and let it run for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5-10 minutes for the oil to settle.

Step 5: Check the oil level

  • Use the dipstick to check the level.
  • Add oil in small amounts until the level is near the full mark.
  • Do not overfill.

✅ After Repair

  • Check under the vehicle for leaks at the drain plug and filter housing.
  • Verify the oil level again after a short drive.
  • Reset the maintenance reminder if your RAV4 displays one.
