🔧 Sierra 1500 - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
Changing the oil and filter keeps the engine clean and helps it last longer. On your Sierra 1500, this is a straightforward under-vehicle service with one drain plug and one spin-on oil filter. Use the correct oil spec and torque the drain plug properly to avoid leaks.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool enough to avoid burns from hot oil and exhaust parts.
- Support the truck with jack stands if you raise it. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves. Used oil can burn skin and eyes.
- Do not overtighten the drain plug or oil filter.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the truck
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the truck if needed for access.
- Support it with jack stands under the proper frame points.
- Make sure the truck is stable before you crawl underneath.
Step 2: Remove the oil drain plug
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan.
- Use a 15mm socket to loosen and remove the drain plug.

Step 3: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter.
- Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old filter.
- Check that the old gasket came off with the filter. If the old gasket sticks, remove it before installing the new filter.
- Wipe the mounting surface clean.
Step 4: Install the new oil filter
- Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
- Thread the new oil filter on by hand until the gasket touches the base.
- Tighten the filter according to the filter label, usually hand-tight plus about 3/4 turn.
- Do not use the wrench to overtighten the new filter.
Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug
- Install the drain plug with a new drain plug seal washer if equipped.
- Use the 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten it to spec.
- Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Refill with fresh oil
- Open the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
- Use a funnel and add about 5.5 quarts first.
- Add the remaining oil slowly until the dipstick reaches the full mark.
- Total capacity with filter is about 6 quarts.
Step 7: Start and inspect for leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Use a rags and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter.
- Shut the engine off and wait a few minutes.
- Check the dipstick and top off if needed.
Step 8: Reset the oil life monitor
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the steering wheel controls to open the Driver Information Center menu.
- Go to Vehicle Information > Oil Life Remaining.
- Press and hold the checkmark or reset button until the system resets to 100%.
✅ After Repair
- Recheck the oil level after a short drive and top off if needed.
