🔧 Engine Oil & Filter - Oil Change

Changing the oil and filter on your E-150 keeps the 5.4L engine clean and protected. This service is straightforward if you can safely lift the van and work around hot oil.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool before draining oil. Hot oil can burn skin.
  • Use wheel chocks and jack stands. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • Engine oil can be slippery. Clean spills right away.
  • Do not overfill the crankcase. Too much oil can damage the engine.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 8mm socket
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (5W-20 synthetic blend or full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
  • Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap before draining. This helps the oil flow out.
  • If the van is low, raise the front safely and support it with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the underside

  • Raise the front of the van with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
  • Make sure the van is stable before going underneath.
  • Shake the van lightly before crawling under it.

Step 2: Drain the old oil

  • Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use an 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain completely, which usually takes several minutes.
  • Install a new drain plug washer if equipped.
  • Reinstall the drain plug by hand first, then tighten with the 8mm socket.
  • Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter.
  • Use an oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the filter.
  • Expect some oil to spill when the filter comes off.
  • Make sure the old filter gasket comes off with the filter, not stuck on the engine.

Step 4: Install the new oil filter

  • Wipe the filter mounting surface clean with a shop rag.
  • Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches.
  • Then tighten it by hand about 3/4 turn more.
  • Hand-tight is enough.

Step 5: Refill the engine

  • Lower the van back to level ground.
  • Use a funnel and add about 5.5 quarts of 5W-20 engine oil first.
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Shut it off and wait 5 minutes for the oil to settle.

Step 6: Check the oil level

  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, then reinsert it fully.
  • Pull it back out and check the level.
  • Add small amounts of oil until the level reaches the safe mark.
  • The total capacity is typically around 6 quarts with a filter, but always finish by dipstick.

Step 7: Inspect for leaks

  • Look under the van for oil leaks at the drain plug and filter.
  • If you see a leak, shut the engine off and tighten the issue before driving.

✅ After Repair

  • Reset the oil life monitor if your van is equipped with one.
  • Recheck the oil level after your first short drive.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter at a recycling center or parts store.
