🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Change
Changing the oil and filter keeps your Accord’s engine clean and properly lubricated. On this model, the job is straightforward if you can safely lift the front of the car and remove the undercovers.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface and keep the parking brake fully engaged.
- Let the engine cool before draining oil. Hot oil can burn skin.
- Support the car with jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
- Wear gloves and safety glasses. Used oil is messy and irritating.
- Do not overtighten the drain plug or oil filter. That can damage threads or the housing.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Warm the engine for a few minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster, but it should not be hot.
- Gather the new oil filter, drain washer, and enough oil before starting.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the vehicle
- Use a floor jack to raise the front of the car at the proper lift point.
- Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the car onto them.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
Step 2: Remove the splash shield
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower engine undercover fasteners.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Position the drain pan under the oil pan drain bolt.
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain fully. Expect a steady stream at first.
- Install a new drain plug crush washer.
- Reinstall the drain plug and torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the filter area.
- Use the oil filter cap wrench or oil filter wrench to remove the old filter.
- Check that the old rubber seal came off with the filter.
- Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Install the new oil filter by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten to the filter’s specified turn angle or snug hand-tight plus a small additional turn.
- Do not use the wrench to overtighten the filter.
Step 6: Reinstall the undercover
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the splash shield fasteners.
- Make sure the panel sits flush and does not hang down.
Step 7: Add fresh engine oil
- Lower the car back to level ground.
- Use a funnel to add about 4.5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic to the engine.
- Wait a minute, then check the dipstick and top off slowly until the level is near the full mark.
Step 8: Start and check for leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Shut the engine off, wait a few minutes, then recheck the oil level.
âś… After Repair
- Verify the oil level on the dipstick with the car on level ground.
- Check again for leaks after a short test drive.
- Reset the maintenance reminder through the dash maintenance menu if needed.
