🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Oil Change

Changing the oil and filter keeps the V6 clean and protected from wear. On your Accord, this is a straightforward service, but you need to drain the oil fully, replace the filter, and refill with the correct viscosity and capacity.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and let the engine cool before draining oil.
  • Use jack stands if you lift the car; never rely on a jack alone.
  • Engine oil and exhaust parts can be hot. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • Keep the oil drain pan stable to avoid spills.
  • Do not overtighten the oil filter or drain plug.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 17mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 synthetic) - Qty: 5.7 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shut the engine off and wait a few minutes for oil to settle.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap to help the oil drain faster.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front of the car

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the car.
  • Support it with jack stands placed at the proper lift points.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.

Step 2: Remove the undertray access panel

  • Use the 17mm socket and ratchet to loosen the engine oil drain plug area if needed through the access opening.
  • If the splash shield blocks access, remove the fasteners as equipped so you can reach the drain plug and filter.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Place the drain pan under the oil pan.
  • Use the 17mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug carefully.
  • Let the oil drain completely.
  • Install a new drain plug crush washer on the plug.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter area.
  • Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the filter.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the filter.
  • Double-check for the old gasket.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Lightly oil the new filter gasket with clean engine oil.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the base.
  • Then tighten it by hand about 3/4 turn more.
  • Do not use the wrench to tighten the new filter.

Step 6: Refill with engine oil

  • Lower the car to level ground if needed.
  • Use a funnel and pour in 5.7 quarts of 0W-20 synthetic engine oil.
  • Install the oil filler cap.

Step 7: Check the oil level

  • Start the engine and let it run for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut it off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Use the dipstick to check the level and top off if needed.
  • Inspect the drain plug and filter for leaks.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the oil level again after a short drive.
  • Check for any seepage around the drain plug and filter.
  • Reset the maintenance minder if your oil life display does not reset automatically.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter at a recycling center.
