🔧 Camry - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
Changing the oil and filter keeps the engine lubricated and helps remove dirt and wear particles. On your Camry, this is a straightforward service, but you’ll want to use the correct 0W-20 synthetic oil and replace the drain plug gasket every time.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool before draining oil. Hot oil can burn you.
- Use jack stands if you lift the front of the vehicle. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Keep the drain plug and filter area clean to prevent contamination.
- Do not overfill the engine. Too much oil can cause engine damage.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shut the engine off.
- Let the engine cool for 15-30 minutes if it was recently driven.
- Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
- If raising the front, support it securely with jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the front
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
- Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
- Make sure the vehicle is stable before crawling underneath.
Step 2: Remove the oil filler cap
- Open the hood and remove the engine oil filler cap by hand.
- This helps the oil drain faster.
Step 3: Drain the old oil
- Position the oil drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain completely.
- Install a new drain plug gasket on the plug.
- Reinstall the drain plug and tighten with a torque wrench to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter area.
- Use an oil filter wrench (cap-style, specialty) to loosen and remove the filter.
- Make sure the old filter gasket comes off with the filter.
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh oil.
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface.
- Tighten the filter an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
- If you use a torque wrench and filter cap setup, tighten to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Do not over-tighten the filter.
Step 6: Add new engine oil
- Lower the vehicle back to level ground if needed.
- Use a funnel and add about 4.5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic oil to start.
- Reinstall the oil filler cap.
Step 7: Check the oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Shut it off and wait 5 minutes.
- Use the dipstick to check the level.
- Add oil a little at a time until the level is near the full mark.
- Total capacity is typically 4.6 quarts with filter.
Step 8: Inspect for leaks
- Look under the vehicle for any oil leaks at the drain plug and filter.
- Wipe up any spilled oil.
✅ After Repair
- Verify the oil level again after a short drive.
- Check the drain plug and filter area one more time for leaks.
- Reset the maintenance reminder in the instrument cluster if it is due.
- Dispose of used oil and filter at a recycling center or auto parts store.
