🔧 Engine Oil and Oil Filter - Oil Change

Changing the oil and filter on your Silverado keeps the engine clean and protected. This is a straightforward service, but you want the right oil type and a clean filter seal so there are no leaks.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool before removing the drain plug. Hot oil can burn you.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the truck. Never rely on the jack alone.
  • Keep oil off belts, exhaust parts, and the serpentine belt.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 15mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Shop towels
  • Latex or nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (SAE 5W-30 full synthetic, dexos1-approved) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and let the engine cool down.
  • Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels if lifting the front.
  • Have the new oil and filter ready before you drain the old oil.
  • Tip: warm oil drains faster, but it should not be hot.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the truck

  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of the truck if needed.
  • Support it with jack stands placed under the proper frame points.
  • Make sure the truck is stable before you get underneath it.

Step 2: Remove the oil fill cap

  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand.
  • This helps the oil drain out faster.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Position the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain completely.
  • Install a new drain plug gasket if equipped.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter.
  • Use an oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the filter.
  • Be ready for more oil to spill when the filter comes off.
  • Make sure the old filter gasket comes off with the old filter.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
  • Then tighten it 3/4 turn more by hand.
  • Do not use a wrench to tighten the new filter.

Step 6: Add new engine oil

  • Lower the truck if needed so it sits level.
  • Use a funnel to add about 5.5 quarts of oil first.
  • Then add oil slowly until the dipstick reaches the full mark.
  • Total capacity is about 6 quarts with filter.

Step 7: Check for leaks and verify level

  • Start the engine and let it run for 30 seconds.
  • Use the dipstick to check the oil level after shutting the engine off and waiting a few minutes.
  • Inspect the drain plug and filter for leaks.
  • Add small amounts of oil if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Reset the oil life monitor: key on, use the Driver Information Center controls to navigate to Oil Life, then hold the reset button until it returns to 100%.
  • Check the oil level again after a short test drive.
  • Recheck for leaks under the truck.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter at a recycling center.
