🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Oil Change
Your Corolla uses a spin-on oil filter and a drain plug on the oil pan. Replacing both together keeps the engine protected and lets you reset your maintenance interval with fresh oil. Use the correct viscosity and torque specs so you don’t damage the aluminum pan or overfill the engine.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool before draining oil. Hot oil can burn you.
- If you raise the front of the vehicle, support it with jack stands. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Keep oil off the serpentine belt and exhaust parts.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

- Ratchet
- Oil filter wrench
- Torque wrench
- Drain pan
- Funnel
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands
- Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and engage the parking brake.
- Run the engine for 2-3 minutes if the oil is cold, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Gather the new oil, filter, and drain plug gasket before starting.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the front of the car
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
- Place jack stands under the vehicle and lower it onto the stands.
- Make sure the car is stable before going underneath it.
Step 2: Remove the engine under cover
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the under cover bolts.
- Lower the cover and set it aside.
- Keep the fasteners in order.
Step 3: Drain the old oil
- Position the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain completely.
- Install a new drain plug gasket on the drain plug.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Replace the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter.
- Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old filter.
- Check that the old filter gasket came off with the filter.
- Lightly oil the rubber gasket on the new filter with fresh engine oil.
- Install the new filter by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface, then tighten it an additional 3/4 turn.
- Do not over-tighten the filter.
Step 5: Reinstall the under cover
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the under cover bolts.
- Snug the fasteners securely.
Step 6: Add fresh oil
- Lower the vehicle back to level ground.
- Remove the oil filler cap and use a funnel to add about 4.5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic.
- Wait a minute, then check the dipstick.
- Add oil slowly until the level reaches near the full mark.
Step 7: Start and inspect
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
- Recheck the dipstick and top off as needed.
✅ After Repair
- Verify the oil level one last time on level ground.
- Check for leaks after a short test drive.
- Reset the maintenance reminder if your vehicle has one.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center.
