🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Oil Change
Changing the oil and filter keeps the engine properly lubricated and helps remove dirt, fuel contamination, and wear particles. On your Silverado, this service is straightforward, but you need the correct oil type and careful draining/filling to avoid overfilling.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool before draining oil. Hot oil can burn you.
- Use jack stands if you raise the truck. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Keep the oil off belts, wiring, and the exhaust.
- Dispose of used oil and filter at a recycling center.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 15mm socket
- 3/8-inch ratchet
- Drain pan
- Oil filter wrench
- Torque wrench
- Funnel
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands
- Wheel chocks
- Gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean rags
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (5W-30 synthetic, dexos-approved) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
- Run the engine 2-3 minutes, then shut it off to warm the oil slightly.
- If you raise the truck, support it securely with jack stands.
- Have the new filter and oil ready before draining.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the truck
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of the truck if needed.
- Place the jack stands under the proper frame points.
- Lower the truck onto the stands and give it a gentle shake to confirm it is stable.
- Never crawl under an unsupported vehicle.
Step 2: Remove the oil fill cap
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand.
- This helps oil drain faster and prevents vacuum buildup.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use the 15mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain completely.
- Install a new drain plug gasket if the old one is flattened or damaged.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 24 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the filter area.
- Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old filter.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the filter. If it sticks to the engine, remove it before installing the new filter.
- Double-check the old seal is not stuck.
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
- Tighten the filter an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
- Do not use the wrench to fully tighten the new filter.
Step 6: Add fresh engine oil
- Lower the truck if needed so it sits level.
- Use the funnel to add about 5.5 quarts of 5W-30 synthetic, dexos-approved oil.
- Wait a minute, then check the dipstick.
- Add oil slowly until the level is at the full mark.
- Total capacity is about 6 quarts with filter.
Step 7: Start and inspect
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- Look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
- Recheck the oil level and top off if needed.
Step 8: Reset the oil life monitor
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the Driver Information Center buttons to find Oil Life.
- Press and hold the reset button until it shows 100%.
- Reset it only after the oil change is done.
✅ After Repair
- Check the oil level again after your first short drive.
- Inspect the drain plug and filter for seepage.
- Verify the oil pressure warning light stays off.
- Record the mileage and service date for your maintenance log.
