🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Refill
This service replaces the old CVT fluid with fresh fluid in your Corolla’s automatic transmission. A drain-and-refill is the safe DIY method; a full flush is not recommended unless Toyota service information specifically calls for it.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on level ground only. A CVT fluid level check must be done with the vehicle level.
- Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
- Transmission fluid can be hot. Let the car cool before draining.
- Do not overfill. Too much CVT fluid can cause shifting problems and leaks.
- No battery disconnect is required for this service.

- Transmission drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
- Transmission overflow/check plug gasket - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels.
- Raise the front of the car and support it securely on jack stands.
- Have all new fluid ready before you start.
- Warm fluid drains faster.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of the car at the proper lift points.
- Place the car on jack stands and confirm it is stable before going underneath.
- Keep the car level side-to-side as much as possible.
Step 2: Remove the fill/check plug first
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to loosen the transmission fill/check plug before draining.
- This confirms you can refill it later. If it is stuck, do not drain the fluid yet.
- Always open the fill side first.
Step 3: Drain the old fluid
- Place the drain pan under the transmission.
- Use the 14mm socket to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain completely.
- Install a new transmission drain plug gasket.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Refill with fresh CVT fluid
- Use the fluid transfer pump to add new CVT fluid through the fill opening.
- Add fluid slowly until it begins to seep from the level check opening.
- Install a new transmission overflow/check plug gasket.
- Reinstall the check plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Final level check
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- With your foot on the brake, move the shifter through each gear position briefly, then return to Park.
- Recheck for leaks underneath.
- If the fluid level is not correct, adjust only per Toyota’s fill/check procedure.
âś… After Repair
- Test drive the car gently.
- Check for leaks again after the drive.
- Watch for smooth acceleration and normal shift behavior.
- If warning lights appear, scan for transmission codes.
