🔧 Rogue - Transmission Fluid Change
This procedure is for the CVT fluid drain-and-fill service on your Rogue. The CVT uses a specific Nissan-approved fluid, and the fluid level must be set at the correct temperature for accurate filling.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface and keep the parking brake engaged.
- The transmission fluid can be hot. Let the vehicle cool before draining.
- Do not use universal ATF. This CVT requires Nissan-spec CVT fluid.
- A scan tool or temperature readout is needed to set the final fluid level correctly.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels before lifting the vehicle.
- Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely with jack stands.
- Keep the vehicle as level as possible for draining and filling.
- Have the scan tool ready to read transmission fluid temperature.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Warm the transmission slightly
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes, then shut it off.
- The fluid should be warm, not hot. This helps it drain more fully.
Step 2: Remove the undertray
- Use a ratchet and the correct 14mm socket to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside.
Step 3: Drain the CVT fluid
- Place a drain pan under the CVT pan.
- Use a ratchet and 19mm socket to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain completely.
- Install a new CVT drain plug crush washer.
- Reinstall the drain plug and tighten to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Refill with new CVT fluid
- Remove the CVT fill plug with a ratchet and 19mm socket.
- Use a fluid transfer pump and funnel to add Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid.
- Add fluid until it reaches the correct level for the temperature-based fill procedure.
- Install a new CVT fill plug seal washer.
- Reinstall the fill plug and tighten to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Set the fluid level at the correct temperature
- Start the engine and keep the shifter in Park.
- Use a scan tool with transmission temperature display (specialty) to monitor CVT fluid temperature.
- With the engine idling, remove the level check/fill access procedure plug as required by the service process.
- When the fluid is at the specified temperature range, top off until a small steady stream drips from the fill opening.
- Reinstall the plug and tighten to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Reinstall the undertray
- Put the splash shield back in place.
- Use the ratchet and 14mm socket to reinstall the fasteners.
Step 7: Final check
- Start the engine and inspect for leaks around both plugs.
- Shift slowly through all gear positions, then return to Park.
- Recheck for leaks after a short road test.
✅ After Repair
- Check that the transmission shifts smoothly and the CVT warning light stays off.
- Inspect the drain and fill plugs again after the road test.
- Dispose of used fluid at a proper recycling center.
