๐ง Equinox - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the vents into the interior. Replacing it on your Equinox helps your heater and A/C work better and keeps dust and odors down.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes
โ ๏ธ Safety & Precautions
- ๐ Do not work while driving; park safely and turn the engine off.
- ๐ Set the parking brake so the vehicle cannot roll.
- ๐ Avoid turning the blower fan on while the filter is removed to keep debris from blowing into your face.
- ๐ If you have dust allergies, wear a mask because old filters can be dirty.
- ๐ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
๐ง Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- ๐งฐ Flashlight
- ๐งฐ Mechanic gloves
- ๐งฐ Safety glasses
- ๐งฐ Small shop vacuum
- ๐งฐ Clean rag

- ๐งฉ Interior trim-safe cleaner spray - Qty: 1 (optional)
๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ Park the Equinox on level ground and set the parking brake.
- ๐ Turn the ignition off and switch the A/C blower fan to OFF.
- ๐งบ Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when you move it.
- ๐ก Have your new cabin filter ready and note the airflow arrow printed on its side.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box
- Open the glove box fully on the passenger side.
- Remove all items from the glove box so you have a clear workspace.
- Use the flashlight to look inside and locate the plastic side stops near the back of the glove box on both sides.
- Keep dropped items from blocking glove box movement.
Step 2: Release the glove box stops
- With the glove box open, gently push inward on the right side of the glove box to flex the plastic past the stop tab.
- Then do the same on the left side, pushing it inward to clear the stop tab.
- Once both sides are clear, let the glove box swing down and hang, exposing the area behind it.
- Use the flashlight again to see the rectangular cabin filter cover directly behind the glove box opening.
Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Look for small locking tabs on the sides of the rectangular cabin filter cover.
- With one hand, press or squeeze the locking tab on one side of the cover while pulling the cover straight toward you.
- If needed, use your other hand to gently pull the opposite side to help slide the cover off; no tools are usually required.
- Set the cover aside somewhere clean so you do not lose it.
Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Use the flashlight to see the old filter inside the slot.
- Grab the filter by its edge and carefully slide it straight out toward you.
- Keep it level to avoid dumping dust and leaves into the footwell.
- Inspect the filter: notice which direction the AIRFLOW arrow is pointing (usually down) so you can match it with the new filter.
Step 5: Clean the filter housing
- Use the small shop vacuum to gently remove any leaves or debris inside the filter housing opening.
- Do not push the vacuum nozzle too far inside to avoid damaging plastic parts.
- Wipe around the opening with a clean rag to remove dust.
- If you have interior-safe cleaner, lightly spray the rag and wipe the area, not the blower fan.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Take the new filter out of its packaging and locate the printed AIRFLOW arrow on the side.
- On the Equinox, the airflow is typically from top to bottom, so the arrow should point down when installed.
- Use the flashlight to guide you as you slide the new filter straight into the slot, keeping it aligned and not bent.
- Push the filter in until it is fully seated and flush with the front edge of the housing.
- Always match airflow arrow to original filter direction.
Step 7: Reinstall the cabin filter cover
- Position the cabin filter cover in front of the opening, lining up its tabs with the slots in the housing.
- Push the cover straight in until the side tabs click into place.
- Use the flashlight to confirm both sides are fully engaged; the cover should be flat and secure.
Step 8: Reattach and close the glove box
- Lift the glove box back toward its normal position.
- Gently push in on one side of the glove box to let the stop tab slide back past the dashboard opening, then do the same on the other side.
- Open and close the glove box a few times to make sure it moves smoothly and the stops are working.
- Return your items to the glove box.
โ After Repair
- ๐ Start the engine and turn on the A/C or heater with the blower fan at different speeds to check for proper airflow.
- ๐ Listen for any unusual noises (rattling or flapping) that might suggest the filter is not seated correctly.
- ๐ Notice if odors are reduced and air feels cleaner; this is normal with a fresh filter.
- ๐๏ธ Plan to replace the cabin filter about once a year, or more often in dusty conditions.
