How to Change Manual Transmission Fluid on a 2018 Jeep Renegade (5-Speed/6-Speed)
Step-by-step drain-and-fill guide with tools list, fluid capacity tips, plug locations, and safety checks

🔧 Renegade - Manual Transmission Fluid Change
On your Renegade (manual), changing the gearbox oil means draining the old fluid from the transmission case and refilling through the fill/level plug until it reaches the correct level. The exact fluid spec, fill amount, and torque specs depend on which manual gearbox your Renegade has.
Before I give the exact spec/torques, answer these 2 quick questions:
- ❓ Is it a 6-speed manual (most 2.4L manuals are) or a different manual (5-speed)?
- ❓ Do you want only the manual transmission fluid, or also the AWD fluids (power transfer unit and rear differential)?
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface; the vehicle must sit level to set the correct fluid level.
- ⚠️ Support with jack stands at factory lift points; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Let the drivetrain cool; hot gear oil can burn skin.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and eye protection; gear oil has a strong odor and can irritate skin.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (6-quart minimum)
- Trim clip removal tool
- Ratchet (3/8" drive)
- Socket set (metric, 8mm-18mm)
- Hex bit socket set (metric, 6mm-12mm)
- Torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs)
- Fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty)
- Shop rags
- Brake cleaner spray
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Manual transmission fluid (OEM-spec for your gearbox) - Qty: 3 quarts
- Fill/drain plug sealing washers (if equipped) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, leave the transmission in 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- If your Renegade has a lower splash shield/skid plate, plan to remove it (usually small bolts and/or plastic clips).
- Important: Always loosen the fill plug first. If it’s stuck and you drain first, you can’t refill.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and level the vehicle
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the center jacking point.
- Set the front down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the factory lift points.
- If needed to keep the vehicle level, raise the rear and support it with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) as well.
Step 2: Remove the lower shield (if equipped)
- Use a socket set (metric, 8mm-18mm) and trim clip removal tool to remove the bolts/clips.
- Set the shield aside so you can access the transmission case.
Step 3: Locate and loosen the fill plug first
- Find the transmission fill/level plug on the side of the manual transmission case (it’s usually about halfway up the case).
- Place a drain pan (6-quart minimum) under the area (a little fluid can drip when opened).
- Use a hex bit socket set (metric, 6mm-12mm) with a ratchet (3/8" drive) to loosen and remove the fill plug.
- Tip: Clean the plug area first. Use brake cleaner spray and shop rags.
Step 4: Drain the old transmission fluid
- Move the drain pan (6-quart minimum) under the transmission drain plug (lowest plug on the case).
- Use the correct size from your hex bit socket set (metric, 6mm-12mm) to remove the drain plug.
- Let it drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug
- Clean the drain plug and magnet (if it has one) using shop rags and brake cleaner spray.
- Reinstall the drain plug by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten with a torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs).
- Torque: I’ll provide the exact Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs) once you confirm 5-speed vs 6-speed.
Step 6: Refill the transmission to the correct level
- Insert the hose from a fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty) into the fill hole.
- Pump in the correct manual transmission fluid (OEM-spec) until fluid just starts to dribble back out of the fill hole (this is the “level”).
- Wait 1-2 minutes, then top off again until it dribbles.
Step 7: Reinstall the fill plug
- Reinstall the fill plug by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs).
- Torque: I’ll provide the exact Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs) once you confirm 5-speed vs 6-speed.
- Clean any spilled oil using shop rags and brake cleaner spray.
Step 8: Reinstall the shield and lower the vehicle
- Reinstall the shield using your socket set (metric, 8mm-18mm) and trim clip removal tool.
- Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then lower fully.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine, press the clutch, and shift through all gears with the vehicle stationary.
- Take a short test drive and listen for abnormal whining/grinding.
- Park, then check underneath for leaks around the fill and drain plugs.
- Dispose of used gear oil at a recycling center or parts store that accepts oil.
