🔧 Transmission Fluid - Fluid Change

Your Golf uses a manual transmission, so this is a gear oil change, not a traditional automatic transmission service. Draining and refilling it on time helps protect the synchronizers and bearings and keeps shift quality smooth.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface. The final fill level depends on the car being level.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • Transmission fluid can be hot if the car was driven recently.
  • Keep dirt out of the fill and drain openings.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan
  • 17mm hex socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • Brake cleaner
  • Shop towels
  • Catch bottle or measuring container

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Manual transmission gear oil, VW-spec - Qty: 2 liters
  • Drain plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
  • Fill plug sealing washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the front of the car and support it securely on jack stands.
  • Keep the car as level as possible during draining and filling.
  • Let the fluid drain fully.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the car

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise the front of the car.
  • Support it with jack stands under the proper lift points.
  • Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
  • Make sure the car sits level before opening the transmission.

Step 2: Locate the fill and drain plugs

  • Find the transmission case under the car.
  • Identify the fill plug first. It is important to confirm it can be removed before draining.
  • Use a 17mm hex socket and ratchet to loosen the fill plug.
  • Always loosen fill first.

Step 3: Drain the old fluid

  • Place a drain pan under the drain plug.
  • Use the 17mm hex socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain completely.
  • Inspect the drain plug for metal particles.
  • Clean the plug with brake cleaner and a shop towel.

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Install a new drain plug sealing washer.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first.
  • Use a torque wrench and 17mm hex socket to tighten it.
  • Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Fill with fresh gear oil

  • Use a fluid transfer pump to pump in the new manual transmission gear oil, VW-spec.
  • Fill until fluid just begins to run back out of the fill opening.
  • This transmission is filled to level, not by exact drain amount.
  • If your fill plug uses a washer, replace it with the new fill plug sealing washer.

Step 6: Reinstall the fill plug

  • Thread the fill plug in by hand first.
  • Use a torque wrench and 17mm hex socket to tighten it.
  • Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the case clean with brake cleaner and a shop towel.

Step 7: Lower and verify

  • Lower the car carefully with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Start the engine and move the shifter through all gears with the clutch pressed.
  • Check underneath for leaks.
  • Take a short test drive and recheck for seepage after parking.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm smooth gear engagement.
  • Check the transmission case and drain/fill plugs for leaks.
  • If shifting feels notchy, recheck fluid level on level ground.
