How to Change Manual Transmission Fluid on a 2016 Toyota Tacoma
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, torque specs, and safety tips

🔧 Transmission Fluid - Fluid Change
This procedure drains the manual transmission fluid and refills it to the correct level. Fresh fluid helps protect the gears, bearings, and synchronizers in your Tacoma’s manual gearbox.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface so the fluid level is set correctly.
- Use jack stands; do not rely on a floor jack alone.
- Transmission fluid can be hot if the truck was recently driven.
- Clean dirt away from the fill and drain plugs before removing them.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the truck
- Use the floor jack to lift the Tacoma and place it on jack stands.
- Keep the truck level so the fluid level is correct during refill.
- Level vehicle equals correct fill.
Step 2: Remove the fill plug first
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to loosen the fill plug on the manual transmission.
- Always remove the fill plug before draining so you know it will refill later.
- Never drain it before checking fill access.
Step 3: Drain the old fluid
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug.
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain completely.
- Inspect the drain plug magnet for metal paste; a thin gray film is normal.
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug
- Install a new drain plug gasket washer.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first.
- Use the torque wrench and 14mm socket to tighten the drain plug to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Refill the transmission
- Use the fluid transfer pump and/or funnel to add manual transmission fluid, GL-4 75W-90 through the fill hole.
- Fill slowly until fluid just begins to run back out of the fill hole.
- This is the correct level on this manual transmission.
Step 6: Reinstall the fill plug
- Install a new fill plug gasket washer.
- Thread the fill plug in by hand first.
- Use the torque wrench and 14mm socket to tighten the fill plug to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
