🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Assumption: Your Accent uses 24mm fill/drain plugs and SAE 75W-85 GL-4 fluid (typical for this manual transmission).

Step 1: Safely raise and level the car

• Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front of the car at the proper front jacking point.
• Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under solid frame/support points and lower the car onto them.
• Confirm the car is stable and reasonably level (this affects fluid level).

Step 2: Locate the fill and drain plugs

• Slide under the front with safety glasses on and use a shop rag to wipe the transmission case clean.
• Find the fill plug on the side of the manual transmission (higher up).
• Find the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission (lowest point).

Step 3: Remove the fill plug (important)

• Place the drain pan underneath, just in case of a small drip.
• Use a 24mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the fill plug.
• If it’s stuck, use steady pressure—don’t jerk the ratchet.

Step 4: Drain the old fluid

• Move the drain pan directly under the drain plug.
• Use a 24mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
• Let it drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 10–15 minutes).

Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer

• Clean the drain plug and surrounding area using shop rags and a light spray of brake cleaner spray.
• Install a new transmission drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug.
• Thread the drain plug in by hand first (to avoid cross-threading).
• Tighten with a 24mm socket and 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 40-50 Nm (30-37 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Fill with new manual transmission fluid

• Insert the fluid transfer pump (specialty) into the fluid bottle (this is a hand pump that pushes oil from the bottle into the transmission).
• Pump fluid into the fill hole until fluid just starts to run back out of the fill hole.
• Pause 1 minute, then top off again until it drips out steadily.
• Pro tip: “Drip-out” level is the target.

Step 7: Reinstall the fill plug with a new crush washer

• Install a new transmission fill plug crush washer onto the fill plug.
• Thread the fill plug in by hand first.
• Tighten with a 24mm socket and 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 40-50 Nm (30-37 ft-lbs).
• Wipe everything clean with shop rags.

Step 8: Lower the car

• Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to raise the car slightly, remove the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum), then lower the car fully.
• Remove the wheel chocks.
