🔧 Corolla - Manual Transmission Fluid Drain & Fill

This job replaces the old gear oil inside your Corolla’s manual transmission with fresh fluid. Fresh fluid helps smooth shifting and reduces wear inside the gearbox.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Support the car on jack stands before going underneath.
  • 🔥 Transmission fluid can be hot—let the car cool 30+ minutes.
  • 🧯 Work on level ground so the fill level is accurate.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 6-quart)
  • 24mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)
  • Fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty)
  • Shop rags
  • Brake cleaner spray

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Manual transmission gear oil (Toyota LV 75W) - Qty: 2 quarts
  • Transmission drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
  • Transmission fill plug crush washer - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Raise the front using a floor jack and support with jack stands.
  • Keep the car level for correct fill.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the fill and drain plugs

  • Slide a drain pan under the transmission.
  • Find the fill plug on the side of the transmission case (faces the front of the car), and the drain plug at the bottom.
  • Clean around both plugs using brake cleaner spray and shop rags.

Step 2: Loosen the fill plug first

  • Use a 24mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen (but do not remove yet) the fill plug.
  • This prevents getting stuck with an empty transmission you can’t refill.

Step 3: Drain the old fluid

  • Use the 24mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain completely into the drain pan (usually 5-10 minutes).
  • Wipe the drain plug clean using shop rags.

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer

  • Install a new transmission drain plug crush washer on the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench with a 24mm socket and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Fill the transmission with new fluid

  • Remove the fill plug using a 24mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Install the hose from the fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty) into the fill hole. (A fluid transfer pump is a hand-operated pump that pushes fluid from the bottle into tight spaces.)
  • Pump in manual transmission gear oil (Toyota LV 75W) until fluid just starts to seep/dribble out of the fill hole.
  • That dribble means the level is correct.

Step 6: Reinstall the fill plug with a new crush washer

  • Install a new transmission fill plug crush washer on the fill plug.
  • Thread the fill plug in by hand.
  • Use a torque wrench with a 24mm socket and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • Clean any spilled fluid using brake cleaner spray and shop rags.

âś… After Repair

  • 🧪 Start the engine and, with the clutch pressed, shift through all gears (engine idling) to confirm smooth engagement.
  • đźš— Take a short 5-10 minute test drive and recheck for seepage around the fill and drain plugs.
  • 🧼 Dispose of used gear oil at a recycling center or parts store that accepts fluids.
