🔧 Tacoma - Manual Transmission Fluid Change

Changing your manual transmission fluid is a simple drain-and-refill service that helps protect gears and synchronizers (the parts that let it shift smoothly). On your Tacoma, the exact fluid type, capacity, and plug torque depend on whether you have the 5-speed or 6-speed manual.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on level ground and use jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; gear oil smells strong and can irritate skin.
  • 🔥 Let the drivetrain cool; the transmission case and fluid can be hot.
  • âś… Always loosen the FILL plug first; if it’s stuck and you already drained it, you can’t refill.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Shop rags
  • Torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range)
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Breaker bar (3/8" or 1/2" drive)
  • 24mm socket
  • 10mm hex bit socket
  • Fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty)
  • Trim pick tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Manual transmission gear oil (Toyota-approved spec) - Qty: 1 (capacity varies by 5-speed vs 6-speed)
  • Transmission drain plug gasket/washer - Qty: 1
  • Transmission fill plug gasket/washer - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface, put the shifter in Neutral, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Lift the front with a floor jack and support the frame with jack stands. The truck must sit level to set the correct fluid level.
  • Pro tip: A short drive warms fluid for faster draining.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Answer these 2 quick questions (so I can give exact fluid + torque specs)

  • Is your Tacoma a 5-speed manual or 6-speed manual?
  • What tool fits your transmission fill plug: 24mm socket or 10mm hex bit socket?

Step 2: Locate the fill and drain plugs

  • Slide under the truck with safety glasses and a flashlight (if you have one).
  • The FILL plug is on the side of the transmission case; the DRAIN plug is on the bottom.
  • Clean around both plugs using shop rags and brake cleaner so dirt doesn’t fall inside.

Step 3: Loosen the fill plug first

  • Use a 24mm socket or 10mm hex bit socket with a breaker bar to crack the fill plug loose.
  • Do not remove it fully yet—just confirm it will come out.

Step 4: Drain the old fluid

  • Place the drain pan under the drain plug.
  • Remove the drain plug using the same style tool (24mm socket or 10mm hex bit socket) and a ratchet.
  • Let it drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 10–20 minutes).

Step 5: Clean and reinstall the drain plug with a new washer

  • Wipe the drain plug clean with shop rags.
  • If the plug has a magnet, remove metal “mud” from it using shop rags.
  • Install a new drain plug gasket/washer.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand, then tighten with a torque wrench to Torque to (spec depends on 5-speed vs 6-speed).

Step 6: Refill the transmission

  • Remove the fill plug fully using the correct tool and a ratchet.
  • Pump fluid in using a fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty). (A hand pump screws onto the bottle and pushes fluid upward into the transmission.)
  • Stop when fluid just begins to dribble back out of the fill hole (that’s the correct level on a level truck).

Step 7: Reinstall the fill plug with a new washer

  • Install a new fill plug gasket/washer.
  • Thread the fill plug in by hand, then tighten with a torque wrench to Torque to (spec depends on 5-speed vs 6-speed).
  • Wipe everything clean with shop rags and brake cleaner.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and shift through all gears (clutch in) to circulate oil.
  • Take a short test drive, then recheck for seepage at the fill and drain plugs.
  • Dispose of old gear oil properly (most auto parts stores accept used oil).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$350 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $45-$120 (parts only)

You Save: $60-$230 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
