🔧 Transmission Fluid - Fluid Change
Assumption: This is for the manual transmission in your Yaris. The procedure below covers a drain-and-refill service on the transaxle, not an automatic transmission.
This service replaces old gear oil with fresh fluid to help the transmission shift smoothly and reduce wear. On a manual Yaris, the job is straightforward if you can safely lift the vehicle and reach the fill and drain plugs.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface so the fluid level can be set correctly.
- Let the exhaust and transmission cool before starting.
- Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- Use the correct fluid only. Wrong gear oil can cause shifting problems.
- Keep the fill plug loose before draining, so you do not trap an empty transmission.
- Wear gloves and safety glasses.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground.
- Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
- Raise the front of the vehicle and support it evenly on jack stands.
- Have the new fluid ready before loosening the plugs.
- Warm fluid drains faster, so a short drive helps if the transmission is cold.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of the Yaris at the proper lift points.
- Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
- Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
Step 2: Locate the fill and drain plugs
- Find the transmission case under the vehicle.
- The fill plug is on the side of the transmission case.
- The drain plug is on the lower part of the case.
- Always remove the fill plug first.
Step 3: Remove the fill plug
- Use the 24mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen and remove the fill plug.
- Check that it moves freely before draining.
Step 4: Drain the old fluid
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug.
- Use the 24mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain completely.
- Clean the drain plug with brake cleaner and a shop towel.
- Install a new drain plug crush washer.
- Reinstall the drain plug by hand first, then torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Refill the transmission
- Use the fluid transfer pump to pump fresh manual transmission gear oil into the fill hole.
- Fill until fluid just begins to seep back out of the fill opening.
- Install a new fill plug crush washer.
- Reinstall the fill plug and torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Clean up and lower the vehicle
- Wipe the case clean with shop towels.
- Check both plugs for leaks.
- Lower the vehicle carefully with the floor jack.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and test the clutch and shifter action.
- Drive slowly and check for smooth shifting.
- Recheck for leaks after a short test drive.
- If shifting feels notchy, verify the correct fluid type and fill level.
