🔧 Patriot - Manual Transmission Fluid Change

This service drains old gear oil from your Patriot’s manual transaxle and refills it with fresh, correct-spec fluid. Fresh fluid helps shifting feel, synchronizer life, and bearing protection—especially if the fluid is dark or you notice notchy shifting.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

Assumption: This covers the Patriot 5-speed manual transaxle with side fill plug and bottom drain plug; plug type/torque can vary slightly by build.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧯 Work on a level surface and support the Patriot with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🔥 Let the drivetrain cool first; the case and fluid can be hot enough to burn you.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; gear oil has a strong odor and can irritate skin/eyes.
  • 🔩 Always loosen the fill plug first—so you don’t drain it and then discover you can’t refill it.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 6-quart)
  • Ratchet (3/8-inch drive)
  • Socket set (metric)
  • Hex bit socket set (metric)
  • Torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs)
  • Trim clip tool
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • Shop rags
  • Brake cleaner spray

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Manual transmission fluid (Mopar spec for Patriot manual transaxle) - Qty: 3 quarts
  • Drain plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
  • Fill plug sealing washer - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • đźš— If you raise the front, raise it evenly and keep the vehicle level on jack stands (important for correct fill level).
  • 🧼 Lay out shop rags and brake cleaner spray—you’ll want the plug areas clean before reinstalling.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm the fluid slightly

  • Drive the Patriot for 5-10 minutes to slightly warm the transmission fluid.
  • Warm fluid drains faster and more completely.

Step 2: Safely raise and support the Patriot

  • Place wheel chocks, then lift with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Set the Patriot down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Give the vehicle a gentle push to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.

Step 3: Remove any lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip tool to remove plastic push-pins.
  • Use a ratchet (3/8-inch drive) with a metric socket to remove any bolts.
  • Set fasteners aside so you don’t lose them.

Step 4: Locate the fill plug and drain plug

  • Clean the area around both plugs using shop rags and brake cleaner spray.
  • The fill plug is typically on the side of the transaxle case; the drain plug is on the bottom.
  • Use a hex bit socket set (metric) or a metric socket—plug style varies.

Step 5: Loosen and remove the fill plug first

  • Use a ratchet (3/8-inch drive) with the correct hex bit socket (metric) or metric socket to break the fill plug loose.
  • Once you confirm it will come out, remove it by hand and set it aside on a clean rag.
  • This prevents getting stuck after draining.

Step 6: Drain the old transmission fluid

  • Position the drain pan (at least 6-quart) under the drain plug.
  • Use a ratchet (3/8-inch drive) with the correct hex bit socket (metric) or metric socket to remove the drain plug.
  • Let it drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 10-20 minutes).

Step 7: Inspect and reinstall the drain plug

  • Wipe the drain plug clean using shop rags.
  • If the plug is magnetic, wipe off metal “fuzz” (fine paste is normal; chunks are not).
  • Install a new drain plug sealing washer if used on your plug design.
  • Reinstall the drain plug by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs): Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Refill the transmission

  • Insert the hose from a fluid transfer pump (specialty) into the fill hole. (A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump that pushes fluid from the bottle into the transmission.)
  • Pump in manual transmission fluid (Mopar spec for Patriot manual transaxle) until fluid just begins to seep back out of the fill hole.
  • Pause for 1 minute, then top off again until it barely dribbles out.
  • The correct level is at the bottom of the fill hole.

Step 9: Reinstall the fill plug

  • Install a new fill plug sealing washer if used on your plug design.
  • Thread the fill plug in by hand first.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs): Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • Clean any spilled fluid using brake cleaner spray and shop rags.

Step 10: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the splash shield using the ratchet (3/8-inch drive) and metric socket, plus the trim clip tool for push-pins.
  • Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), and lower the Patriot.

âś… After Repair

  • 🧪 Start the engine and, with the clutch pressed, shift through all gears while parked.
  • đźš— Take a 5-10 minute test drive and confirm smooth shifting and no new noises.
  • 🔍 Recheck for leaks around the fill and drain plugs.
  • ♻️ Pour used fluid into a sealed container and take it to an oil/fluid recycling drop-off.
