🔧 Tacoma - Manual Transmission Fluid Change
Your Tacoma’s manual transmission uses gear oil to lubricate bearings and gears. Changing it helps prevent wear, reduces shifting effort, and removes metal debris that builds up over time.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work on a level surface; keep the truck stable on jack stands.
- 🛑 Let the transmission cool; hot gear oil can burn you.
- 🛑 Chock the rear wheels and leave the truck in gear.
- 🛑 No battery disconnect is required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- 24mm socket
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- Torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)
- Drain pan (at least 8-quart)
- Fluid transfer pump (hand pump)
- Shop rags
- Brake cleaner spray
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Manual transmission gear oil (Toyota Genuine MT Gear Oil LV 75W) - Qty: 3 quarts
- Transmission drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
- Transmission fill plug crush washer - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Tacoma on a level driveway so the fluid level will be accurate.
- Take a short 5-10 minute drive, then let it cool 10 minutes. Warm drains faster, not scalding hot.
- Jack up the front and support it with jack stands; keep the truck as level as possible.
- Set wheel chocks at the rear tires.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the fill and drain plugs
- Slide under the middle of your Tacoma and find the manual transmission case.
- The fill plug is on the side of the transmission; the drain plug is on the bottom.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
Step 2: Loosen the fill plug first
- Place the drain pan under the transmission (in case of seepage).
- Use a 24mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to break the fill plug loose.
- If the fill plug won’t loosen, stop and don’t drain it yet. You must be able to refill it.
Step 3: Drain the old gear oil
- Reposition the drain pan directly under the drain plug.
- Use a 24mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let it drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 10-15 minutes).
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer
- Clean the drain plug and surrounding area using shop rags and brake cleaner spray.
- Install a new crush washer on the drain plug (it’s a soft sealing washer that prevents leaks).
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Fill the transmission with new gear oil
- Remove the fill plug fully using the 24mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Install the hose from the fluid transfer pump into the fill hole.
- Pump in Toyota Genuine MT Gear Oil LV 75W until the level reaches the bottom of the fill hole and just begins to trickle out.
- Fill level is “to the fill hole,” not by counting quarts.
Step 6: Reinstall the fill plug with a new crush washer
- Install a new crush washer on the fill plug.
- Thread the fill plug in by hand.
- Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs).
- Wipe everything clean using shop rags and brake cleaner spray.
Step 7: Lower the truck
- Use the floor jack to lift slightly, remove the jack stands, then lower your Tacoma.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and, with the clutch pressed, shift through all gears while parked.
- Take a 5-10 minute test drive and confirm shifting feels normal.
- Park on a clean spot and look underneath for leaks around the fill and drain plugs.
- Dispose of used gear oil at a recycling center or auto parts store.
