🔧 Wrangler - Manual Transmission Fluid Change

This service drains the old fluid from your manual transmission and refills it with the correct lubricant. Fresh fluid helps smooth shifting and reduces wear, especially if the old fluid is dark or you feel notchy shifts.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the Wrangler with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Let the drivetrain cool; hot exhaust and hot fluid can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses; fluid can splash when plugs loosen.
  • ⚠️ Do not rely on a floor jack alone—always use jack stands.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 6-quart)
  • 17mm hex bit socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 ft-lb range)
  • Shop rags
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Manual transmission fluid (MS-9224 Synchromesh-spec) - Qty: 2 quarts
  • Thread sealant (PTFE) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels.
  • Raise the Wrangler and support it on jack stands so it sits as level as possible (important for correct fill level).
  • Place a drain pan under the transmission.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the fill and drain plugs

  • Slide under the Wrangler with safety glasses on and a work light if needed.
  • Find the manual transmission case. You’ll see two internal-hex plugs: the fill plug on the side of the case and the drain plug at the bottom.
  • Clean around both plugs using brake cleaner spray and shop rags so dirt can’t fall inside.

Step 2: Loosen the fill plug first

  • Use a 17mm hex bit socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to break the fill plug loose.
  • If the fill plug won’t loosen, stop here—don’t drain it yet. You must be able to refill it.
  • Tip: A steady pull works better than jerking.

Step 3: Drain the old transmission fluid

  • Position the drain pan directly under the drain plug.
  • Use the 17mm hex bit socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 10-20 minutes).
  • Wipe the drain plug clean with shop rags. If the plug has a magnet, clean off any metal paste (a light paste is normal).

Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Apply a small amount of thread sealant (PTFE) to the drain plug threads (avoid the first thread so excess doesn’t squeeze inside).
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten using a 3/8" drive torque wrench and 17mm hex bit socket: Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lb).

Step 5: Fill the transmission

  • Remove the fill plug fully using the 17mm hex bit socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump new fluid into the fill hole (a fluid transfer pump is a hand pump that moves fluid from the bottle into tight spaces).
  • Fill until fluid just begins to seep back out of the fill hole (this is the correct level when the vehicle is level).
  • Wait 1 minute, then top off again until it barely dribbles out.

Step 6: Reinstall and torque the fill plug

  • Apply a small amount of thread sealant (PTFE) to the fill plug threads.
  • Thread the fill plug in by hand, then tighten with a 3/8" drive torque wrench and 17mm hex bit socket: Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lb).
  • Spray the area with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop rags so you can easily spot leaks later.

✅ After Repair

  • Lower the Wrangler safely using the floor jack and remove the jack stands.
  • Start the engine, clutch in, and gently shift through all gears while parked to circulate fluid.
  • Take a short 10-minute drive, then recheck underneath for any seepage at the fill/drain plugs.
  • Dispose of used fluid at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts waste oil/fluids.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$320 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$70 (parts only)

You Save: $110-$290 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1-1.5 hours.
