🔧 Wrangler - Manual Transmission Fluid Change

You’ll be draining the old gear oil from your Wrangler’s manual transmission and refilling it with the correct spec fluid. Fresh fluid helps shifting feel, reduces wear, and can prevent noisy bearings over time.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the Wrangler with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Let the drivetrain cool a bit—fluid and exhaust parts can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses—fluid can drip sideways when the plug breaks loose.
  • ⚠️ Keep the Wrangler level while filling, or the level will be wrong.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 2-gallon)
  • 17mm hex bit socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–100 ft-lbs range)
  • Fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty)
  • Shop rags
  • Brake cleaner spray

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Manual transmission fluid (Mopar Manual Trans Lubricant MS-9224, 75W-85) - Qty: 2 quarts
  • Transmission drain/fill plug sealing washers - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and apply the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks at the tires to prevent rolling.
  • Warm the transmission with a 10-minute drive, then shut the engine off.
  • Raise the Wrangler with a floor jack and support it on jack stands so it sits level.
  • Set your drain pan under the transmission.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the fill and drain plugs

  • Slide under the Wrangler from the driver side with safety glasses on.
  • Find the fill plug on the side of the transmission case (higher up) and the drain plug at the bottom.
  • Fill plug first—prevents getting stuck.

Step 2: Remove the fill plug (do this first)

  • Place the drain pan underneath in case a little fluid drips.
  • Use a 17mm hex bit socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the fill plug.
  • Wipe the plug clean with shop rags.
  • If it’s tight, steady pressure—not jerky.

Step 3: Drain the old fluid

  • Move the drain pan directly under the drain plug.
  • Use the 17mm hex bit socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let it drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–15 minutes).

Step 4: Clean the drain plug and reinstall it

  • Most drain plugs are magnetic—wipe off any metal fuzz using shop rags.
  • Spray the plug area lightly with brake cleaner spray and wipe clean.
  • Install a new sealing washer if equipped/required.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten using a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Pump in new transmission fluid

  • Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty) into the fill hole. (A hand pump is a tool that pushes fluid from the bottle up into the transmission.)
  • Pump in MS-9224 75W-85 fluid until it just starts to run back out of the fill hole.
  • Pause for 30–60 seconds, then top off again until it barely dribbles out.
  • The dribble means the level is correct.

Step 6: Reinstall the fill plug

  • Clean the fill plug with shop rags.
  • Install a new sealing washer if equipped/required.
  • Thread it in by hand, then tighten with a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)
  • Wipe the case clean with shop rags so you can spot leaks later.

Step 7: Lower the Wrangler

  • Remove tools from underneath.
  • Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove jack stands, then lower to the ground.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine, then with the clutch fully pressed, shift through all gears with the vehicle stationary.
  • Take a short 5–10 minute drive and check for leaks around the fill and drain plugs.
  • Recheck the area the next day for any fresh drips.
  • Dispose of used fluid at a recycling center or parts store that accepts oil/fluids.
