🔧 Seltos - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
Changing the engine oil and oil filter keeps your A4’s engine lubricated, clean, and protected from wear. You’ll drain the old oil, replace the filter, then refill with the correct oil and verify the level.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot oil and exhaust parts.
- ⚠️ Always support the Seltos with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts, hoses, and oxygen sensor wiring.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
- Engine oil - Qty: 1
Tip: Use the oil grade shown on the under-hood label.
- For the 1.6L Turbo: commonly 5W-30 full synthetic
- For the 2.0L: commonly 5W-20 or 5W-30 (follow the label)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park the Seltos on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Warm the engine 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. This helps oil drain faster.
- Open the hood and loosen the oil filler cap by hand (do not remove it yet).
- If equipped with a lower splash shield, plan to remove the access panel first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the front
- Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) at the front jacking point.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) x2 at the approved support points.
- Give the Seltos a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.
Step 2: Remove the lower cover/access panel (if equipped)
- Remove clips using a trim clip tool.
- Remove any screws using a flathead screwdriver (or the fastener type present).
- Set the panel and fasteners aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Place the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Remove the drain plug using a 17mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
- Remove the old crush washer and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.
- Reinstall the drain plug by hand first (prevents cross-threading), then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 39-44 Nm (29-32 ft-lbs).
- Tip: Wipe the drain area clean first.
Step 4: Remove the old oil filter
- Move the drain pan
- Loosen the filter using an oil filter wrench (cap or strap type).
- Spin the filter off by hand, keeping the open end facing up to reduce mess.
- Use shop rags to wipe the sealing surface on the engine.
- Tip: Make sure the old rubber gasket came off.
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket with fresh oil using a gloved finger.
- Install the new filter by hand until the gasket touches.
- Tighten by hand 3/4 turn after gasket contact (no wrench unless the filter instructions say otherwise).
Step 6: Reinstall the lower cover/access panel
- Reinstall the panel and fasteners using the trim clip tool and flathead screwdriver.
- Confirm nothing is hanging down or contacting the exhaust.
Step 7: Refill with the correct oil
- Lower the vehicle off the stands using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Remove the oil filler cap and add oil using a funnel.
- Add most of the required amount first (don’t dump it all in at once).
- Wait 1 minute, then check the dipstick and top up to the full mark.
- Tip: Add oil in small amounts near “FULL”.
Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and recheck level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-45 seconds.
- Shut it off and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Wait 5 minutes, then recheck the dipstick and adjust as needed.
✅ After Repair
- Reset the maintenance reminder (if your Seltos displays one) per the cluster menu.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling drop-off (many parts stores accept it).
- After your next short drive, recheck underneath for any seepage.
