🔧 4Runner - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter element, then refill with fresh oil to protect your engine from wear. On your 4Runner, the oil filter is a cartridge-style element in a housing under the front of the engine.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a flat surface and support the 4Runner with jack stands before going underneath.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool 10–20 minutes; hot oil can burn you.
- ⚠️ Use wheel chocks and set the parking brake.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts, exhaust, and tires; wipe spills immediately.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 7 quarts
- Oil filter element (cartridge type) - Qty: 1
- Oil filter housing O-ring set - Qty: 1
- Engine oil drain plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap to help the crankcase vent while draining.
- Raise the front using a floor jack and support it securely on jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the front under-cover access
- Slide the drain pan under the engine area.
- If your 4Runner has a small oil-service door in the skid plate, remove the fasteners using a 10mm socket.
- If there is no service door, remove the front skid plate bolts using a 12mm socket, then lower the plate carefully.
Step 2: Drain the engine oil
- Locate the oil drain plug on the oil pan.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish by hand.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
- Remove the old crush washer with an oil drain plug gasket pick and install the new one on the drain plug.
- Reinstall the drain plug and tighten with a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 40 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Drain the oil filter housing (cartridge filter)
- Find the oil filter housing (a round cap-style housing) near the front underside of the engine.
- Position the drain pan under the filter housing.
- Remove the small filter housing drain plug using a 3/8" drive ratchet (square drive) or a small flathead screwdriver if equipped with a slotted style.
- Install the oil filter housing drain tool (specialty) to drain the oil from the housing. (This tool opens the internal valve so the housing can drain with less mess.)
- After draining, remove the drain tool and reinstall the small drain plug using a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 13 Nm (10 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the oil filter cap and replace the filter element
- Use the 64mm 14-flute oil filter cap wrench (specialty) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the housing cap.
- Pull the old cartridge filter element out of the housing.
- Remove the old O-ring(s) from the cap using a small flathead screwdriver. Don’t scratch the plastic cap.
- Install the new O-ring(s) from the oil filter housing O-ring set and lightly coat them with fresh 0W-20 oil.
- Install the new cartridge filter element into the housing.
- Reinstall the housing cap and tighten with a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Reinstall the skid plate / access door
- Reinstall the service door or skid plate using a 10mm socket or 12mm socket (whichever you removed).
- Snug the fasteners evenly using a 3/8" drive ratchet. Don’t over-tighten small bolts.
Step 6: Refill with new oil
- Lower the 4Runner back to level ground using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Place a funnel in the oil fill opening.
- Pour in 6.6 quarts of SAE 0W-20 full synthetic (this is the typical refill amount with filter change; final level is set by the dipstick).
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 7: Verify oil level and check for leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter housing, using a bright light and shop towels.
- Check the dipstick, then add oil in small amounts using the funnel until it reaches the full mark (don’t overfill).
✅ After Repair
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly (many parts stores/service shops in Panipat accept waste oil).
- Recheck the dipstick the next morning (cold engine) and top off if needed.
- Reset the maintenance reminder:
- Use the steering wheel buttons to display Trip A on the dash.
- Turn ignition OFF.
- Press and hold the ODO/TRIP button, then turn ignition ON (do not start).
- Keep holding until the reset completes (dashes/zeros finish).
