📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. This helps the oil drain faster without being dangerously hot.
- Lift the front of the car with a floor jack and support it with jack stands at proper front support points.
- “Cartridge filter” means a replaceable paper element inside a reusable housing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the front underbody access panel
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Position the drain pan under the engine oil pan area.
- Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet to remove the small access cover bolts/clips.
- If there are push-clips, pop them out using a flat trim clip tool.
Step 2: Drain the engine oil
- Use a 14mm socket with a ratchet to loosen the oil drain plug.
- Finish removing the plug by hand and let the oil drain into the drain pan.
- Remove the old crush washer from the plug and install the new oil drain plug gasket.
- Reinstall the drain plug by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- Tip: Hand-start threads to prevent expensive damage.
Step 3: Remove the oil filter housing and replace the filter
- Move the drain pan
- Use the oil filter cap wrench 64mm 14-flute (specialty) with a ratchet and 3/8" drive extension to loosen the housing.
- Slowly spin it off and let remaining oil drain out.
- Remove the old oil filter element from the housing.
- Remove the old O-rings from the housing using a shop rag (don’t scratch the plastic/metal sealing surfaces).
- Install the new O-rings from the oil filter housing O-ring set.
- Lightly coat (lubricate) the new O-rings with fresh 0W-20 engine oil using a finger.
- Install the new oil filter element into the housing.
- Reinstall the housing by hand until snug, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- O-ring lube prevents leaks and torn seals.
Step 4: Reinstall the underbody access panel
- Reposition the access cover.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall bolts snugly (do not over-tighten plastic panels).
- Reinstall any clips using the flat trim clip tool as needed.
Step 5: Refill the engine with new oil
- Lower the car off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap.
- Insert a funnel and add SAE 0W-20 full synthetic (start with about 6.0 quarts).
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 6: Start, check for leaks, and set the oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to settle.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter housing. Use shop rags to wipe and re-check.
- Check the dipstick and add oil as needed to reach the full mark (add in small amounts).
Step 7: Reset the oil maintenance reminder
- Option A (multi-information display): Use steering wheel controls to go to Settings > Vehicle Settings > Maintenance System > Oil Maintenance > Reset.
- Option B (if your cluster uses ODO/TRIP method): With ignition OFF, set the display to Trip A using the steering wheel/ODO button, then turn ignition ON while holding the button until the reset completes.

- Recheck the oil level the next morning (cold engine) and top off if needed.
- Look under the car after your first short drive to confirm no seepage.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly (most parts stores/service centers accept waste oil).
