🔧 QX60 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with fresh oil. This keeps your engine lubricated and helps prevent wear, sludge, and overheating.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

Assumption: Factory-recommended oil is 0W-20 full synthetic (verify your oil cap/owner’s manual).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool 10-20 minutes; oil can burn skin.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts/exhaust; wipe spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (8-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • Ratchet
  • Socket extension (6-inch)
  • 10mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Torque wrench (10-80 Nm range)
  • Oil filter wrench (65mm, 14-flute cap style)
  • Trim clip removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
  • Lower engine undercover fastener clips - Qty: 1-3 (optional)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off and wait 10-20 minutes for safer draining.
  • 🧱 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🛠️ Locate the lower engine undercover (a plastic splash shield that blocks access under the engine).
  • 🧴 Open the hood and loosen the oil fill cap (helps oil drain faster).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the front

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front at the approved front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the front support points and lower onto them.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the lower engine undercover

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic clips (it’s a forked tool that lifts push-pins without breaking them).
  • Set the undercover and hardware aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

Step 3: Drain the old oil

  • Place the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish by hand.
  • Let oil drain until it becomes a slow drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
  • Remove the old oil drain plug crush washer (a soft metal ring that seals the plug) and install the new one.

Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (10-80 Nm range) with a 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter area (it will drip).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (65mm, 14-flute cap style) with a ratchet and 6-inch extension to loosen the filter.
  • Spin the filter off by hand and keep it upright to reduce spills.
  • Use shop rags to wipe the filter mounting surface clean.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket isn’t stuck.

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Put a thin film of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
  • Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the engine.
  • Use the oil filter wrench (65mm, 14-flute cap style) and torque wrench.
  • Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the lower engine undercover

  • Position the undercover and start all fasteners by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket to snug the bolts.
  • Reinstall any clips with hand pressure; replace damaged clips if they won’t hold.

Step 8: Refill with new oil

  • Lower the vehicle safely off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in 5.0 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic first.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.

Step 9: Start, check for leaks, then set the oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-45 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter using safety glasses.
  • Check the dipstick and top off slowly as needed (most end up around 5.1 quarts total with filter).

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Recheck the dipstick after a short drive and add oil if needed.
  • 🧼 Wipe any oily areas clean so new leaks are easy to spot.
  • 🗑️ Take used oil and the old filter to a recycling center/parts store that accepts waste oil.
  • 🖥️ Reset the oil reminder (if equipped): Settings (steering-wheel buttons) > Maintenance > Oil & Filter > Reset.
