🔧 X5 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

Changing the oil and filter keeps your turbo engine lubricated and helps prevent sludge, timing chain wear, and turbo damage. On your X5, the oil filter is on top of the engine, and the drain plug is underneath the engine splash shield.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

Assumption: using BMW LL-01 oil; capacity varies slightly by setup.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot oil and exhaust parts.
  • ⚠️ Always support the X5 with jack stands (never rely on a jack alone).
  • ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses; used oil is messy and can irritate skin.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts/hoses; wipe spills immediately with shop towels.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • 8mm socket
  • Torx T25 bit socket
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (3/8" drive)
  • 36mm oil filter housing socket
  • Torque wrench (5–60 Nm range)
  • Oil filter pick tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (BMW Longlife-01 full synthetic, typically 5W-30 or 0W-30) - Qty: 7 quarts
  • Oil filter kit (filter + O-rings) - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap to help the crankcase vent while draining.
  • Lift the front of the X5 using a floor jack and support it securely on jack stands at the proper jack points.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine splash shield (undertray)

  • Slide the drain pan under the engine area.
  • Use an 8mm socket and Torx T25 bit socket (fasteners vary by panel) with a 3/8" ratchet to remove the undertray fasteners.
  • Set the panel and fasteners aside in a safe spot. Keep bolts grouped by location.

Step 2: Drain the engine oil

  • Locate the oil drain plug on the oil pan.
  • Use a 17mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish unscrewing by hand.
  • Let the oil drain for 10–15 minutes until it slows to a drip.
  • Remove the old crush washer and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.
  • Reinstall the drain plug by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Replace the oil filter (top of engine)

  • Find the oil filter housing cap on top of the engine.
  • Use a 36mm oil filter housing socket with a 3/8" ratchet and 6" extension to loosen the cap slowly.
  • Lift the cap out; the filter usually comes out attached to the cap.
  • Pull the old filter off the cap (firm pull).
  • Use an oil filter pick tool (a small hook tool) to remove the old O-ring(s) from the cap grooves.
  • Install the new O-ring(s) from the filter kit. Lightly coat them with fresh engine oil so they don’t pinch.
  • Push the new filter onto the cap until it clicks/seats.
  • Reinstall the cap by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Reinstall the undertray

  • Position the splash shield back in place.
  • Use the 8mm socket and Torx T25 bit socket with a 3/8" ratchet to reinstall and snug the fasteners.
  • Do not overtighten plastic fasteners.

Step 5: Add new engine oil

  • Lower the X5 back to level ground using the floor jack and remove the jack stands.
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill port.
  • Add about 6.5 quarts first, then reinstall the oil filler cap.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds, then shut it off.
  • Wait 2–3 minutes, then check the electronic oil level (iDrive/cluster oil measurement). Top off slowly as needed (small amounts at a time).

Step 6: Reset the oil service reminder (Condition Based Service)

  • Turn ignition on (engine off). Press the Start/Stop button without pressing the brake.
  • Press and hold the trip odometer reset button on the instrument cluster until the service menu appears.
  • Use short presses of the same button to scroll to Engine oil.
  • Press and hold the button to select reset, then press and hold again to confirm.
  • If reset is locked out, recheck oil level first.

✅ After Repair

  • With the engine running, look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and confirm the filter housing area is dry.
  • Recheck the electronic oil level after a short 10-minute drive on level ground; top off if needed.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center or parts store that accepts waste oil.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹9,000-₹18,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹5,000-₹10,000 (parts only)

You Save: ₹4,000-₹8,000 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹2,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-2.0 hours.
