How to Change Engine Oil & Replace the Oil Filter on a 2016 Audi A6
Step-by-step DIY guide with required tools, parts, oil spec (VW 502 00), torque specs, and service reset

🔧 A6 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
You’ll drain the old oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with fresh oil that meets Audi’s required specification. Clean oil protects the turbo and timing components and helps your A6 run smoothly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the car with jack stands (never rely on a jack alone).
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool 20-30 minutes; hot oil can burn you.
- ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses; oil can splash when the plug comes out.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off the drive belt area and oxygen sensors.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (full synthetic meeting Audi/VW spec VW 502 00, commonly 5W-40) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Oil filter cartridge kit (includes new O-ring) - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug (optional, if damaged) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap (this helps the crankcase vent while draining).
- Raise the front of the car with a floor jack and support it securely on jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the lower engine cover (belly pan)
- Place the drain pan under the engine area.
- Use a Torx T25 bit and Torx T30 bit to remove the belly pan screws.
- If equipped with small nuts, remove them using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Set the belly pan and fasteners aside in a safe spot.
Step 2: Drain the engine oil
- Slide the drain pan directly under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 19mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and extension to loosen the drain plug.
- Finish unthreading by hand and pull the plug away quickly to reduce splashing.
- Let the oil drain for at least 10 minutes until it slows to a drip.
Step 3: Replace the drain plug crush washer and reinstall the plug
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first (this prevents cross-threading).
- Tighten using a torque wrench and 19mm socket: Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Replace the oil filter (top-mounted cartridge style)
- Locate the oil filter housing at the top of the engine.
- Use a 32mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the filter housing cap.
- Lift the cap and attached filter out and let it drip into the housing for a moment.
- Pull the old filter cartridge off the cap.
- Replace the cap O-ring from the new filter kit. (An O-ring is a rubber sealing ring.)
- Lightly coat the new O-ring with fresh oil using a gloved finger.
- Push the new filter onto the cap until it fully seats.
- Reinstall the cap by hand until snug, then tighten with a torque wrench and 32mm socket: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Reinstall the belly pan
- Reposition the belly pan.
- Install fasteners by hand first, then tighten using Torx T25/Torx T30 and/or a 10mm socket.
- Snug them evenly. Do not over-tighten plastic panels.
Step 6: Refill the engine with oil
- Lower the car from the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Pour in about 4.5 quarts first, then reinstall the oil cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds, then shut it off.
- Wait 3-5 minutes, then check the oil level (MMI oil level display or dipstick if equipped) and top off as needed.
✅ After Repair
- Look under the car for leaks around the drain plug area after the first idle.
- Re-check the oil level after a short 5-10 minute drive and top off if needed.
- Reset the service reminder in MMI (common path): CAR > Servicing & checks > Service intervals > Reset oil change interval.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center or auto parts store.
