How to Change Engine Oil & Replace the Oil Filter on a 2016 Audi A4
Step-by-step DIY oil service with tools, VW/Audi 502.00 oil spec, torque specs, and MMI reset tips
🔧 A4 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
This job drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter element, then refills with the correct spec oil. Fresh oil protects your turbo engine from wear, sludge, and overheating, and the new filter keeps grit out of the bearings.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
Assumption: your A4 uses a top-mounted cartridge oil filter and a belly pan.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a flat surface and support the car with jack stands (never the jack alone).
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be hot—let the engine cool 15–30 minutes to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts and hoses; clean spills immediately (oil is slippery).
- ⚠️ If you raise the front, use wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for an oil change.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum, pair)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (at least 8-liter)
- Funnel
- Shop towels
- Torx T25 screwdriver
- Torx T30 screwdriver
- Ratchet (3/8" drive)
- Extension (3/8" drive, 6")
- 19mm socket
- 32mm socket
- Torque wrench (5–60 Nm range)
- Plastic trim tool
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (VW/Audi 502.00 spec, typically 5W-40 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Oil filter cartridge - Qty: 1
- Oil filter housing O-ring - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🧰 Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster, but you don’t want it scalding hot.
- 🧰 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- 🧰 Gather your tools and parts. Once the car is in the air, you don’t want to crawl out for missing items.
- 🧰 Know where your oil level display is: CAR > Servicing & checks > Oil level (used later).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Safely lift and support the front
- Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front at the approved front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the left and right front support points, then lower the car onto the stands.
- Give the car a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.
Step 2: Remove the lower belly pan (undertray)
- Use a Torx T25 screwdriver and Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the undertray fasteners.
- If it has slide-tabs, use a plastic trim tool to release them without cracking the panel.
- Set the undertray and screws aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.
Step 3: Drain the old engine oil
- Place the drain pan (at least 8-liter) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a ratchet (3/8" drive) with a 19mm socket to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug (if it’s stuck), and install the new crush washer.
- Reinstall the drain plug by hand first (prevents cross-threading), then tighten with the torque wrench: Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
- Tip: push plug inward while unthreading.
Step 4: Replace the oil filter (top-mounted cartridge)
- Open the hood and locate the oil filter housing cap on top of the engine.
- Put shop towels around the housing to catch drips.
- Use a 32mm socket with a ratchet (3/8" drive) and extension (3/8" drive, 6") to loosen the housing cap.
- Lift the cap straight up; the filter cartridge will usually come out attached to the cap.
- Pull the old filter cartridge off the cap (it just snaps on).
- Replace the cap’s O-ring: use a plastic trim tool to remove the old O-ring, then install the new O-ring in the same groove.
- Lightly coat the new O-ring with a little fresh engine oil (helps it seal and not pinch).
- Snap the new filter cartridge onto the cap, then reinstall the cap into the housing.
- Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Tip: O-ring must sit flat, not twisted.
Step 5: Reinstall the belly pan (undertray)
- Position the undertray back in place.
- Start all screws by hand first, then tighten using the Torx T25 screwdriver / Torx T30 screwdriver.
Step 6: Refill with the correct oil
- Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
- Insert a funnel and add about 4.5 quarts of VW/Audi 502.00 spec oil to start.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds, then shut it off.
- Wait 2–3 minutes for oil to settle, then check oil level in the MMI: CAR > Servicing & checks > Oil level.
- Add oil in small amounts until the display shows the level in the correct range (avoid overfilling).
- Tip: add 0.25 quart at a time.
Step 7: Lower the car
- Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift slightly, remove the jack stands, then lower the car to the ground.
Step 8: Reset the oil service reminder (if needed)
- With ignition on, use MMI: CAR > Servicing & checks > Service intervals and select Reset oil change interval (wording may vary).
- If your menu shows a reset option for “service,” reset only what matches what you did (oil change).
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Look under the car for leaks around the drain plug area after your first short drive.
- 🔍 Recheck the oil level in the MMI: CAR > Servicing & checks > Oil level and top off if needed.
- 🧾 Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly (many parts stores and service shops accept it).
- 🛠️ If you spilled oil, clean it with shop towels before it smokes on the next drive.
