🔧 Renegade - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
This service drains the old engine oil and replaces the oil filter so your engine stays properly lubricated and protected. On your Renegade, the oil filter is a cartridge-style filter in a housing, so you’ll replace the internal filter and the O-ring seal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-90 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and support the Renegade with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be hot. Let the engine cool 10-15 minutes to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts/exhaust and clean spills immediately to prevent smoke and slipping.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, MS-6395 equivalent) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Oil filter cartridge (with new O-ring) - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface, shift to 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Run the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off (this helps oil drain faster without being dangerously hot).
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap (helps the oil drain more smoothly).
- If your Renegade has a lower splash shield, be ready to remove it using a T25 Torx bit socket and trim clip removal tool.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the Renegade
- Place the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front center jacking point and lift the front.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the correct front support points.
- Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before you crawl underneath.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Use a T25 Torx bit socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the screws.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic push-clips (a trim clip tool is a forked pry tool that lifts clips without breaking them).
- Set the shield and hardware aside so you can reinstall it later.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Slide the drain pan (7-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 13mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and 3/8" drive extension (6") to loosen the drain plug.
- Finish removing the plug by hand and let the oil drain completely (usually 5-10 minutes).
- Tip: push plug inward while unscrewing.
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer
- Wipe the drain plug area with shop towels.
- Install a new drain plug crush washer on the plug, then thread the plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten using a torque wrench (3/8" drive) and 13mm socket: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Replace the oil filter cartridge (top-mounted housing)
- From the top of the engine bay, locate the oil filter housing cap.
- Place shop towels around the housing to catch drips.
- Use a 27mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the housing cap and remove it (the 27mm socket fits the hex on the filter cap).
- Pull the old cartridge filter off the cap and install the new cartridge filter.
- Remove the old O-ring from the cap and install the new O-ring (lightly coat the O-ring with fresh oil so it doesn’t pinch).
- Reinstall the cap by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench (3/8" drive) and 27mm socket: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Refill with new engine oil
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Pour in about 5.0 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic first.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 7: Start, check for leaks, then set the oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and inspect underneath and around the filter housing for leaks using safety glasses and a flashlight (if you have one).
- Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and add oil in small amounts using the funnel until it reaches the safe/full range.
- Tip: add 0.2 quart at a time.
Step 8: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the vehicle
- Reinstall the splash shield using the T25 Torx bit socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and trim clip removal tool.
- Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), and lower the Renegade.
Step 9: Reset the oil life reminder
- Pedal method: Turn ignition to RUN (do not start), then fully press and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 10 seconds, then turn ignition OFF.
- Cluster menu method (if equipped): Use steering wheel buttons to navigate to the oil life screen and press/hold OK to reset.
✅ After Repair
- Recheck the oil level after your first short drive (5-10 minutes) and top off if needed.
- Confirm there are no drips under the vehicle and no seepage around the filter housing cap.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling drop-off (most parts stores/shops accept it).
