🔧 Expedition - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

Changing the oil and filter keeps your A4’s engine lubricated, clean, and protected from wear. On your Expedition, you’ll drain old oil from the oil pan, replace the spin-on oil filter, then refill with the correct spec oil and reset the oil life monitor.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

Assumption: using 5W-30 and about 6.0 quarts with filter for the 3.5L EcoBoost.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and use jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Hot oil can burn you; let the engine cool 15–30 minutes before draining.
  • ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses; oil can irritate skin and eyes.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts, hoses, and electrical connectors; wipe spills immediately.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension (6")
  • Oil drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Oil filter wrench (cap-style or strap-style)
  • Funnel
  • Torque wrench (10–100 Nm range)
  • Shop rags
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (SAE 5W-30 meeting Ford spec) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug gasket/washer (if equipped) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. This helps oil drain, but keeps it safer than fully hot oil.
  • Open the hood and loosen the oil fill cap by hand (this helps the pan drain faster later).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the front of your Expedition

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper front jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Shake test it lightly—no wobble.

Step 2: Position the drain pan

  • Slide the oil drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use safety glasses; the first stream can shoot out sideways.

Step 3: Drain the old engine oil

  • Use a 13mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
  • Inspect the drain plug threads and the sealing surface; replace the drain plug gasket/washer if your plug uses one.

Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (this prevents cross-threading).
  • Use a torque wrench (10–100 Nm range) to tighten: Torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean with shop rags.

Step 5: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the oil drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil filter area (oil will spill when the filter comes off).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (cap-style or strap-style) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the old filter (a stuck gasket can cause a bad leak).

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket with fresh oil (dip a finger in new oil). This helps it seal and come off next time.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
  • Hand-tight is correct—don’t wrench-tighten.

Step 7: Refill with new engine oil

  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in about 5.5 quarts first (use the remaining to top off after checking level).
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.

Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and set the final oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to settle.
  • Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop rags, reinsert, then check level again.
  • Add oil in small amounts using the funnel until it reaches the proper range on the dipstick (don’t overfill).

Step 9: Reset the oil life monitor

  • Turn key to ON (engine off), or press Start button without pressing the brake (if equipped).
  • Using the steering wheel controls, navigate the driver display to: Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset.
  • Select Reset and confirm until it shows 100%.

âś… After Repair

  • Recheck for drips after your first short drive (5–10 minutes).
  • Verify the dipstick level one more time on level ground.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center or auto parts store (most take it free).
