🔧 NX - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

This service drains the old engine oil and replaces the oil filter element so your NX’s turbo engine stays protected and clean. Doing it on time helps prevent sludge, timing-chain wear, and turbo bearing damage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

Assumption: Your NX uses a cartridge-style oil filter housing and full-synthetic 0W-20; verify oil spec on the oil cap/under-hood label and confirm final level on the dipstick.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the NX with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool 15–30 minutes; hot oil can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts and exhaust parts; wipe spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Do not get under the vehicle with only a floor jack holding it up.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–80 Nm range)
  • 14mm socket
  • Oil filter housing cap wrench 64mm 14-flute (specialty)
  • Flat trim clip tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Full synthetic engine oil (0W-20) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter element (cartridge type) - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter housing O-ring set - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap to help the crankcase vent while draining.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and safely support the NX

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the front center jack point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the approved front support points and lower onto them.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle push to confirm it’s stable before you crawl underneath.

Step 2: Remove the lower engine under cover

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the under-cover bolts.
  • Use a flat trim clip tool to pop out any plastic clips (pry the center pin up first, then remove the clip).
  • Set the cover hardware aside so nothing gets lost.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Position the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
  • Remove the old drain plug gasket (crush washer) from the plug and install the new one.

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 3/8" drive torque wrench with a 14mm socket to tighten: Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean with shop towels so leaks are easy to spot later.

Step 5: Remove the oil filter housing cap and replace the filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter housing area (some oil will spill).
  • Use the oil filter housing cap wrench 64mm 14-flute (specialty) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the housing cap.
  • Pull the cap down and remove the old cartridge filter element from the cap.
  • Replace the O-ring(s) on the housing cap using the new oil filter housing O-ring set.
  • Lightly coat the new O-ring(s) with fresh oil (dip a gloved finger into new oil). Prevents pinched O-rings.
  • Install the new oil filter element (cartridge type) onto the cap and reinstall the cap by hand.
  • Tighten the housing cap using a 3/8" drive torque wrench and the 64mm 14-flute cap wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Reinstall the lower engine under cover

  • Reposition the under cover.
  • Reinstall bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Reinstall clips by pressing them in; use the flat trim clip tool only if needed to align them.

Step 7: Refill with new engine oil

  • Lower the NX back to the ground (raise slightly with the floor jack, remove jack stands, then lower).
  • Place a funnel in the oil fill opening and add about 5.5 quarts of 0W-20 to start.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.
  • Start the engine for 30–60 seconds, then shut it off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Check the dipstick and top off as needed to reach the full mark (do not overfill).

Step 8: Reset the oil maintenance reminder

  • Turn ignition to ON (engine off).
  • Using the steering wheel buttons, go to the multi-information display settings: Settings (gear icon) > Vehicle Settings > Maintenance System > Oil Maintenance.
  • Select reset/yes to confirm.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and inspect underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter housing.
  • Recheck the dipstick after a short 5–10 minute drive and top off if needed.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly at an oil recycling drop-off (most parts stores accept it).
  • If you smell burning oil, recheck for a spill on hot parts and wipe clean.
