How to Change Engine Oil & Replace the Oil Filter on a 2014 Mazda CX-5
Step-by-step DIY oil service with 0W-20 oil capacity, tools/parts list, drain plug torque specs, and reset tips

🔧 CX-5 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct oil. This keeps your CX-5’s engine properly lubricated and helps prevent wear and sludge buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.75-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the CX-5 with jack stands, not just a jack.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool 15-30 minutes; hot oil can burn you.
- ⚠️ Chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts/tires and clean spills immediately.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Oil filter (spin-on) - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer (gasket) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, engine off, and apply the parking brake.
- Chock both rear wheels.
- Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off and wait 15-30 minutes.
- Raise the front of the CX-5 with a floor jack and set it securely on jack stands at the factory lift points.
- Open the oil cap now; it drains faster.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Use an 8mm socket to remove the small bolts.
- Use a flat trim clip tool to pop out plastic clips (a trim clip tool is a flat pry tool that removes push-clips without breaking them).
- Set the shield and hardware aside in the order removed.
Step 2: Drain the old engine oil
- Place the drain pan (at least 7-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 17mm socket, ratchet, and socket extension (3-inch) to loosen the drain plug.
- Finish removing the plug by hand and let the oil drain fully (5-10 minutes).
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new one.
Step 3: Reinstall and torque the drain plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand until it seats.
- Use a torque wrench (10-80 Nm range) and 17mm socket to tighten: Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the area clean with shop rags.
Step 4: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan (at least 7-quart) under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
- Use an oil filter wrench (adjustable band type) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
- Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter (it should not stay stuck to the engine).
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Dip a gloved finger (use nitrile gloves) into fresh oil and lightly oil the new filter’s rubber gasket.
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface.
- Tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn (do not use the wrench to tighten).
- Wipe the area clean with shop rags.
Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield
- Reposition the shield.
- Reinstall clips with the flat trim clip tool.
- Reinstall bolts using the 8mm socket and ratchet.
Step 7: Refill with new oil and check level
- Lower the CX-5 off the jack stands using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Remove the oil fill cap and insert a funnel.
- Pour in SAE 0W-20 full synthetic (start with about 4.5 quarts), then reinstall the oil cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds, then shut it off.
- Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed to the full mark.
- Add oil slowly; dipsticks can lag.
Step 8: Reset the oil maintenance reminder (if it’s on)
- Dash maintenance menu method: Use the steering wheel/dash controls to navigate to Settings > Maintenance > Oil Change > Reset.
- If you don’t have that menu: Tell me what warning you see (wrench icon, “Oil Change Due,” etc.) and I’ll give the exact reset steps for your cluster.
✅ After Repair
- With the engine idling, look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Recheck the oil level after your first short drive (5-10 minutes).
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly (most parts stores/service shops will take it).
