🔧 Focus - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, and refill with the correct oil. Fresh oil protects your engine from wear and helps it run cooler and cleaner.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-90 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Let the engine cool 20-30 minutes to avoid burns from hot oil.
- 🛠️ Support the car with jack stands or ramps on level ground; never rely on a jack alone.
- 🧯 Keep oil off the exhaust and away from sparks; wipe spills immediately.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (SAE 5W-20 meeting Ford WSS-M2C945-A) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Drain plug gasket/washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Run the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Open the hood and loosen the oil fill cap by hand (this helps oil drain smoothly).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front of the car
- Use a floor jack to lift the front at the proper lift point, then set it onto jack stands.
- Give the car a gentle push to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Use a 7mm socket and 8mm socket to remove the shield fasteners.
- Use a trim clip tool to pop out any plastic clips without breaking them.
Step 3: Drain the old engine oil
- Position the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (typically 5-10 minutes).
- Wipe the drain plug and install a new drain plug gasket/washer.
- Reinstall the drain plug by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
- Use an oil filter wrench (band type) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the old filter (a stuck gasket can cause a major leak).
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Put a light film of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten 3/4 turn by hand. Don’t use the wrench to tighten.
Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield (if removed)
- Reposition the shield and reinstall fasteners using a 7mm socket and 8mm socket.
- Snug them evenly (do not overtighten into plastic).
Step 7: Refill with fresh oil
- Lower the car back to the ground using the floor jack.
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole and add about 4.5 quarts of SAE 5W-20 (Ford WSS-M2C945-A).
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and set the oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle 30-60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back to the pan.
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop towels, reinsert fully, then recheck.
- Add oil in small amounts until the level is at the full mark (don’t overfill).
- Look underneath for leaks around the drain plug and filter.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Recheck the dipstick after a short 5-10 minute drive and top off if needed.
- 🧾 Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center or parts store.
- 🔁 Reset the oil life monitor (if your Focus has it):
- Steering wheel menu method: Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset > Hold OK
- If that menu isn’t present: Key ON (engine OFF), press gas and brake pedals fully for ~20 seconds until a reset message appears.
