🔧 Rogue - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

Changing the engine oil and oil filter keeps your engine lubricated and removes contaminants that cause wear. You’ll drain the old oil, replace the filter, then refill with the correct oil and verify the level.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on level ground and support the Rogue on jack stands before going underneath.
  • 🛑 Let the engine cool 20–30 minutes—hot oil can burn you.
  • 🛑 Keep oil off the exhaust and belts; wipe spills immediately.
  • 🛑 Wear gloves and safety glasses; used oil is a skin irritant.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–80 ft-lb range)
  • Oil filter wrench (65–67mm cap style or adjustable band style)
  • Drain pan (7-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Raise the front with a floor jack and place on jack stands at the proper lift points.
  • Open the hood and loosen/remove the oil filler cap to help the crankcase vent while draining.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Slide your drain pan under the engine area.
  • Use a trim clip tool and flat-blade screwdriver to remove the plastic clips/screws holding the small access panel or front under-cover.
  • Set the clips aside so you don’t lose them.

Step 2: Drain the old engine oil

  • Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
  • Finish unthreading the plug by hand and pull it away quickly so the oil streams into the drain pan.
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new one.
  • Let the oil drain for 5–10 minutes until it slows to an occasional drip.

Step 3: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 3/8" drive torque wrench with 14mm socket: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean with shop towels.

Step 4: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (65–67mm cap style or adjustable band style) to loosen the filter.
  • Spin the filter off by hand and keep it upright as you remove it.
  • Wipe the mounting surface with shop towels and make sure the old rubber gasket isn’t stuck to the engine.
  • Double-gasket = big leak.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Put a light film of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket (use a gloved finger).
  • Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
  • Tighten by hand an additional 2/3 to 3/4 turn. (Do not use the wrench to tighten unless access requires it.)

Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield

  • Reposition the cover and reinstall clips/screws using the trim clip tool and flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 7: Refill with new engine oil

  • Lower the Rogue off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in about 4.8 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic first.
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap.
  • Sneak up on the final level.

Step 8: Start, check for leaks, then set the oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back to the pan.
  • Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert fully, then pull again to read the level.
  • Add oil in small amounts (use the funnel) until the level is near the top mark. Typical fill is about 5.1 quarts total with filter.
  • Wipe any spilled oil with shop towels.

✅ After Repair

  • Take a short 5–10 minute drive, park, wait 5 minutes, and re-check the dipstick level.
  • Verify there are no fresh drips under the engine.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center/parts store that accepts waste oil.
  • If your Rogue has an oil maintenance reminder, reset it in the information display: Settings > Maintenance > Oil Control System > Reset (wording may vary).
