🔧 CX-5 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
This job drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills with fresh oil. Fresh oil protects your engine from wear and helps it run cooler and cleaner.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool 15-30 minutes; oil can burn you.
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands before going under it (never rely on a jack alone).
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; used oil is messy and irritating.
- ⚠️ Do not over-tighten the drain plug; the oil pan threads can strip.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap and dipstick (this helps the oil drain quicker).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and safely support the front
- Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front of your CX-5 at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
- Give the vehicle a firm shake to confirm it’s stable before you go underneath.
Step 2: Open the lower splash shield access
- Under the front of the vehicle, locate the small service/access door in the lower splash shield (undercover).
- Use an 8mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the small bolts holding the access door, then swing/remove the door.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Place a drain pan (at least 7-quart capacity) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the drain plug, then let the oil drain fully (usually 5-10 minutes).
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.
Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first (this prevents cross-threading).
- Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the area clean with shop towels so you can spot leaks later.
Step 5: Remove and replace the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter area (a little oil will spill).
- Use an oil filter wrench (adjustable band type) to loosen the old filter, then spin it off by hand.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket (seal) did not stick to the engine. Double-gasket can cause a big leak.
- Put a thin film of fresh SAE 0W-20 oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket.
- Install the new filter by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield access door
- Reposition the access door and install the bolts using an 8mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet.
Step 7: Lower the vehicle
- Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift slightly, remove the jack stands, then lower the vehicle to the ground.
Step 8: Refill with fresh oil
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole.
- Pour in 4.6 quarts of SAE 0W-20 full synthetic.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap and dipstick.
Step 9: Start, check for leaks, and verify oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 3-5 minutes for oil to settle.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter using safety glasses.
- Check the dipstick and top off as needed (add small amounts using the funnel).
✅ After Repair
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center or auto parts store (never dump it).
- Re-check the dipstick the next day and top off if needed.
- Reset the oil maintenance reminder (your CX-5 may have one of these setups):
-
🧰 If you have a Maintenance menu:
- Turn ignition to ON (engine off), then use the info controls to go to Settings > Maintenance > Oil Change > Reset.
-
🧰 If you do not see a Maintenance menu:
- Tell me what warning you’re trying to clear (wrench light vs message), and I’ll give the exact reset steps for your cluster.
